Open ended travel medical insurance

Folks,

I am planning some open ended travel with no return date or return flight booked, but would like to purchase emergency medical insurance. Medical is all I needed. I'm finding it difficult to find an insurer to cover a trip with no fixed return date. I estimate my trip will be around 30 to 60 days traveling around Europe. Any suggestions on companies that write policies for such trips?
Thanks,
bg

I know some people have had success with geoblue and an annual travel medical policy. It does depend on the state where you live. It is available in some states and not in others.

I think Travel Guard offers medical only, and on an annual basis too. But are you talking about the actual costs of treatment, versus the medical evacuation (to bring you back to home for medical care)?

Website for GeoBlue is https://www.geobluetravelinsurance.com/product_overview.cfm
Trekker is their annual policy. If it is not available in your state, there will be a link to their sister company HTH Travel Insurance. GeoBlue annual insurance covers trips up to 70 days each. As always read the plan docs.
I have not used GeoBlue yet but plan to for September 2022 and June 2023 trips

On the one-way tickets: I've been using them into Istanbul or Paris for several years now. PHL to FRA to IST or CDG via Lufthansa or JFK to IST via Turkish Air. No one has ever asked to see a return ticket. At most I have been asked "how long do you plan to stay?" to which I reply: "I am retired and plan to stay a few week to month."

I book one way at a time with all our travel to Europe; there has never been an issue with one-way flights.

But when we flew to New Zealand from Australia, the Emirates agent at check-in asked to see proof that we had a flight out (which we did). I knew about that requirement and had a copy of our return ticket (New Zealand to Australia) so it was not a problem.

For your trip insurance, assuming yo do not want to purchase an annual policy, you could just enter the 60-day return date, and the trip price you have paid so far (the one-way flight and any other non-refundable payments) for the trip cost. You can amend the trip cost, and the actual dates, later, up to the date of travel (or the day before) but not once the trip has started. I do this way myself, as I have often not figured out the return date at the time I book the outbound flight. Just make sure it is all correct before you depart, or you could be denied coverage.

I carry Annual travel insurance with Allianz. Depending on which coverage you take, you can get up to 90 days for each trip to have coverage. With an annual policy, you don't have to tell them how long each trip will be, it just can't be longer than 90 days. The cost of annual insurance was a deal compared to per trip insurance.

I'm seeing better pricing for GeoBlue Trekker Choice than Allianz AllTrips Primier on their second-tier annual multi-trip emergency medical plans. There may be some details I am missing, but the GeoBlue plan looks like it will cover my needs. Also note these plans do not require a fixed return date on any trip though have restriction on the length of each trip -- 70 days on Geoblue vs 90 days Allianz.

As I have posted before, we rarely have a return flight booked when we arrive. We have never been questioned other than the rather generic question of "How long do you plan to stay?" Three to four weeks is always a good answer. We are always playing the ff game for business class seats for the return so that provides a degree of uncertainty.

My family uses an annual policy through Allianz as well. They just recently included emergency medical coverage for Covid, so I'd take a look at them. Another option would be a Nomad plan through SafetyWing.

Thanks to all for their replies. I think I'll go with GeoBlue given the price difference with Allianz.

William, I should have added on my previous post that I also intend to buy Medjet evac annual insurance. Although GeoBlue includes evac, it is to the the nearest facility. Medjet will get you home. That’s the way I interpreted both policies. https://medjetassist.com/
