In a nutshell. Vacationed in countries that only required proof of vaccination, and then tested positive when they took the mandatory Covid test for return to the US. Depending on where they were, quarantine and more testing.

…including a couple who thought they had allergies at the time they departed the US for Europe but probably had COVID-19, highlighting that it is probably smart to get tested for COVID-19 before you depart, whether your destination requires it or not and whether you think you have symptoms or not.

The article also pointed out that, at least in the UK, you can be tossed into quarantine as a result of contact tracing. That happened to a visitor who then, some weeks later, actually caught COVID-19 and had to go back into quarantine.
