Italy's acceptance of the US CDC Vax card

We are traveling to Venice/Bologna/Umbria/Rome on April 9th. I understand some places are recognizing the "white card" (CDC vax card) for US tourists as a replacement for the green pass. I feel like we will be ok in Venice and Rome, but does anyone have experience in the less touristy areas of Umbria? I'm hoping we can flash our CDC cards and be ok. I've heard we will need ID as well, but not sure if that means passport or drivers license. We typically like to leave our passports in the hotel room safe. Thanks!

Based on our trip this past October, the CDC card will be immediately accepted in Umbria. One museum in Spoleto asked to see our ID as well, and we used U.S. passports. Two museums in Bologna also wanted to see ID as well, in addition to our “White Pass from America.” Restaurants were fine with just the CDC card.

A couple places early in our trip (Bologna, then Tuscany, then Umbria . . . Rome at the end) hesitated for a moment when we showed the CDC cards before happily accepting them, but as the trip went on, more and more of them were used to regularly seeing U.S. vaccination documentation. Six months later, you’ll find the CDC cards will be widely recognized. Have a good, safe trip!

Just finished two weeks in Italy. Every place we went to recognized the CDC card. Sometimes they called it “the American Green Pass.” Whatever. On occasion, some wanted an ID and I showed my passport, but I think some in my group used a driver’s license ( with picture) with success.

In these times, I highly suggest carrying your passport and original CDC card with you as you go about. The passport will be needed for ID, your drivers license is really not recognized. Museums and those types of venues will be more likely to want to see the passport with the CDC card. I also found that showing the US passport sort of prepared the person to see the card (Oh! American, so they will have one of those funny slips of paper) as opposed to just pulling out a card when they expect a QR code to scan. In fact, during our trip, often just pulling out our passport was enough to get waved in, never looking at the card.

Thanks everyone! It sounds like we will be good to go. I’ll make sure to have our passports on hand.
