Individual Travel Policy coordination with Credit Card Travel Cancellation/Interruption benefits

When booking my airline tickets, I opted for the Allianz Travel insurance that was offered as it specifically stated that it covered COVID related events. Looking at the policy more closely, I see that the coverage is rather skimpy, although they would cover $250/day for 5 days in the event of quarantine. I booked all my airline tickets (Delta, Transavia, EasyJet ) and all hotels with my Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card. I will be paying the balance of our Rick Steves' Adriatic trip with the Chase Sapphire Preferred card as well. Looking at the Chase Sapphire Preferred benefits, it appears they would pay secondary to the Allianz coverage. Sure looks like I have better coverage under the Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card than the Allianz insurance.

Has anyone experienced the unfortunate event of needing to utilize dual coverage like this in the event of testing COVID positive or some other unforeseen event? If so, how did it go? Am I correct that Allianz would be the first payer, and Chase Sapphire the secondary payer? I also have medical coverage under my EGHP, and I believe there is some coverage in a foreign country.

I've searched the travel threads, but I only see a lot of dated information about credit card trip interruption/cancellation coverage.

I have no first hand experience, but when I read the Chase benefit booklet it seems clear that this insurance is intended to pay what is not paid by other insurance or refunded by the original provider.

Here is some key language.
The Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption benefit covers a broad array of ‘what–ifs’ that can impact travel plans, reimbursing if: • Accidental Bodily Injury, Loss of Life, or Sickness experienced by You or Your Traveling Companion which prevents You or Your Traveling Companion from traveling on the Trip
Quarantine of You or Your Traveling Companion imposed by a Physician or by a competent governmental authority having jurisdiction, due to health reasons

Please Pay Special Attention to These Conditions of the Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption Benefit: • If You suffer a loss causing Trip Cancellation or Trip Interruption, You must immediately notify the appropriate Travel Supplier of such cancellation. If such notification by You does not occur and failure to notify the Travel Supplier results in the surrender of Non–Refundable Eligible Travel Expenses, that would have otherwise been refundable

had You notified the Travel Supplier, no benefit shall be payable. If a loss prevents You from providing the notification, the benefit may still apply.

Thanks for the input Carol. Making lots of notes to self. So far: (1) Make sure you cancel all reservations with travel providers to obtain any applicable refunds and (2) Make sure medical provider indicates the need to quarantine (with documentation) in the event of a positive Covid test result.

Not that I want to file a claim, but, in the event it is necessary, I hope these trip insurance providers don't make the process too onerous.

You said you are paying the balance with your card. Some cards require the entirety of the trip to be paid with the card to have any coverage.

This is exactly why we haven't bought trip insurance yet and I just keep hemming and hawing. We too used our Chase Sapphire Preferred to pay and it looks way better than any actual insurance companies coverage that I've seen. It's made me wonder if I need the additional insurance or just what my CC covers should do it.

Allianz has sent out an email to policy holders temporarily extending the number of days past 5 for some policies. You may want to check with them.
