If you tested positive and had to extend your stay - your experience with travel insurance?

Hello everyone,

I know we have some people on this board who unfortunately have tested positive while on their trip.

I was hoping if that was you if you wouldn't mind sharing how your travel insurance has been in regards to filing a claim and if they are reimbursing you if you had to pay for a hotel or apartment while you isolate and wait for a negative test?

I know it will vary by policy, but in another thread here, we were wondering if you needed to provide any type of additional documentation to trigger your insurance benefits under a possible quarantine or medical isolation clause. For example, was a positive covid test enough to show you could not return or, or did you also have to get a doctor's note saying you should isolate and not travel for medical reasons?

Thank you so much for sharing or any other information you can share!

Thanks for asking this! I was planning on posting a similar question. I just booked travel insurance for my trip to Netherlands and France and spoke with a very helpful Insure My Trip rep. She stressed that, if I tested positive in France, I must provide a (French) government-issued order of quarantine for my claim to be paid. She couldn’t tell me what form that would take - but that it was absolutely needed.
So I’m also very curious to know what especially folks testing positive in France are using to file claims once they get home.
Thanks!

This is a good question. I also want to know how helpful or not the insurance company is if you are confronted with this situation. And please be specific as to who the travel insurer is.

AON and Seven Corners have told me their terminology is Trip Delay. It can be a delay to begin the trip, to join a tour in progress, or to add days after the “trip end date” due to illness/accident. My policies state the beginning and ending dates of coverage but both companies will cover extra expenses for hotel/meal/transportation after the coverage “end” date in the case of medical quarantine. A positive Covid test report is not sufficient to make a claim. A doctor’s note requiring isolation/quarantine is required for these 2 companies. Another forum thread poster said her insurer’s term is “Trip Extension”.

Bumping this up to hopefully get some firsthand info from travelers who have tested positive and dealt with their travel insurance company/claims after returning to U.S.
My insurance is with Trawick International via InsureMyTrip.com. Would love any details re:what “government-issued documentation” may have been used if you get a positive test from pharmacy and have to quarantine in France.
Thanks!

When investigating different travel insurance options, I found it helpful to seek customer satisfaction reviews based on claims filed, not just insurance purchased. Some of the carriers have very low marks for claims satisfaction when they have high marks for the purchase experience. It pays to drill deeper. I ultimately selected Allianz "All Trips" which is an annual plan for multiple journeys. It was a separate plan from any credit card coverage. I haven't had to file a claim yet.

I don't recall the website that provided these reviews but I'm sure you could find it if you look around a bit.

I hope this is helpful.

I forgot to mention that my plan has a separate rider for Covid that pays $250/day for up to 14 days. I would need a doctor's diagnosis and requirement for me to quarantine, not a general mandate that doesn't specifically mention me by name. I combed through the terms & conditions so I could understand any restrictions or benefits that would apply.

I remember on one of the recent Monday Night Travel zooms that RS does, that one of the best ways to determine what travel insurance will cover in regards to COVID is to make yourself a list of "What if ...." questions and call the insurance representative with them and take notes. For example - "What if I test positive prior to flying home and have to quarantine. What costs will the insurance cover and at what percentage ?" Note some insurances will say they cover hotel rooms, but fail to mention, except in the fine print, that it's really 50% of costs up to a certain amount. I think I would add the question - "My total cost of the quarantine room was $1000, how much of that will the insurance cover?"

I bought a policy the other day that covers about $100 a day. I realize that would not be enough but I have enough financial resources that I could cover it to so this seems good to me.

I would have to get evidence that I have Covid and it would not be acceptable from any kind of home test.

Also, the policy makes it very clear that if I just decide not to go because I’m worried about Covid I’m entitled to nothing. Which is fine since everything expensive except the airfare can be cancelled and on airfare i will get a credit I could use until the end of 2023

My husband returned from Milan on Monday and is still tired but we will have to address this issue and file a claim in the near future. We have a Chase Sapphire Card and his initial contact with Chase sounded promising in covering all documented expenses due to a positive Covid test resulting in the 10 day quarantine and inability to complete international travel. We will see. And from what I’ve been reading in regards to airline passenger rights, the airline is suppose to refund his ticket versus issuing a credit because flight interruption was due to a positive Covid test. Again, we will see. He has his positive Covid results and the letter from his primary, the Document of Recovery, stating when his symptoms started and when he was cleared to travel, 11 days from testing positive. The day you test positive is considered day 0.
