Differences between [Abbott Covid] antigen self-test, and PRC lab test, for flying out & return???

My husband had this very simple question, which after all these hours of prepping for this upcoming trip- I can't answer:

We are flying thru Heathrow to Switzerland. We had the PRC test for the upcoming flight out; we have the proctored self-test for the return flight. Why the difference? It is that we working with the UK rules for the way out, and CDC rules for the return? My husband asked why we don't need the lab test for the return, or couldn't do the self-test for the flight out?
I didn't have an answer, but I know someone here will.

Thanks so much and safe travels!

You are correct, just a difference in requirements.

Apparently the UK, or Switzerland require a molecular test, in this case a PCR. Coming back to the US, it is the US Government that sets the requirements, and they decided to allow either the Molecular, or the Antigen test. So you could have done the lab test for both, just the antigen test is quicker and easier.

The Molecular PCR is more sensitive and a more thorough test, so many countries prefer that.

On your other post I gave you the government policy. Regardless of any US requirements you will need a covid test to transit Heathrow, either a PCR, LAMP or LFT test. Plus a Passenger Locator Form.

If you intend to leave the airport you will also need a Day Two PCR booked and paid for (even if you don't use it) before completing your PLF before travel.
