Cancel anytime insurance

Wasn’t sure where to post this so I hope this is the right place. I’ve been seeing posts in travel insurance recently. If I’m able to get something together for this September, I would probably (for the first time) get cancel anytime insurance. Are the comments about companies recently posted for only medical insurance or can I assume the same advice/tips holds for cancellation insurance? I know it would have to be purchased much sooner than medical (within 2-3 weeks of buying a trip), but otherwise didn’t know about specific recommendations or who to avoid. Thanks.

Most travel protection policies require that CFAR (Cancel For Any Reason) travel protection must be purchased within 14-21 days of your initial payment/deposit. Many companies do allow you to buy travel protection until 24 hours before you depart. If you have to file a claim, then the policies have a "look-back" period (generally 60-90 days before your purchase date) to make sure you have no pre-existing conditions.

CFAR is often 50% higher in cost than a "standard" travel protection policy. Today's standard policies have medical coverage, trip interruption, trip delay, repatriation, lost luggage coverage, and your costs can be covered for cancellation - if it's for a "covered" reason. CFAR does allow you to say, "I simply choose not to go..." As a result, some companies - post covid - are not selling CFAR.

Check, too, on how much coverage you actually have under a CFAR policy. I have never purchased one, but I believe they only reimburse you 50% or (for a higher premium payment) 75% of the covered costs.

Are you a USAA member? If so, we always get insurance thru them and their highest policy allows this.

Good point acraven - I think the highest CFAR coverage I've seen is 75% of the covered policy amount. So no, given that. you will not get all your money back with a CFAR policy!

Thanks for the tips. I didn’t realize they cap limits. The whole point of this would be COVID related so I guess 75% is better than nothing but it’s another thing to think about before planning anything. And I do have USAA so will check that out as well.

USAA is who we have used for over 10 years -= they offer great International and domestic plans. You can either call, or you can google USAA travel insurance and it will take you to the link. You type in your age and destination and dates and it will give you 3 plans to choose from,. They have never let us down.

I was excited to hear that USAA has travel coverage and checked it out. The USAA site took me to their partner site www.travelinsured.com. The rates for2 plans to cover my RS tour trips were significantly higher (58% higher for the lower level of the 2 plans I considered) than my Nationwide quote for "roughly similar" coverage: trip cancellation/interruption; secondary medical, etc. Drat, I was hopeful!

that's interesting -- as when we price compare, esp a policy with Medical Evacuation, USAA just can't be beat - even when we are gone for 3+ weeks.
