We are planning on traveling to France, Italy and Spain next month. We fly in and out of Paris CDG. It seems like, as of now, the only test we need is to re-enter the United States coming home. We are flying United. Has anyone ordered the BinaxNOW test and taken that before coming home? Or any recommendations on accepted tests in Barcelona? FYI we are vaccinated. Thank you in advance.
Georgia, I am flying United, coming back from Romania the 19th of August. I also have ordered the BinaxNOW test and can give a shout out how it goes for me if you would like.
That would be great. Safe travels!
I plan to use the BinaxNOW test for my return from Switzerland next month. I think it was on the Greece forum where someone reported details on taking that test. It seems like the most convenient option as you can easily work it into your day or night.
Thank you Georgia. I'm planning on taking a "practice" test here to know what to expect. I didn't really want to try and find a clinic or whatever in another country, so it seemed like the best bet. There's only myself, so I can burn a few out of the 6 pack. 😉
I have found these places that provide rapid antigen tests in Barcelona if you decide to not go the BinaxNOW route
https://www.privaclinic.com/en/medical-check/371-rapid-test-of-covid-19-antigens-in-barcelona.html
https://turoparkmedical.com/rapid-antigenic-test-in-barcelona/
Upon researching I stumbled upon this article that is very useful. It lists a dozen locations in Barcelona along with the address, phone number, which tests they provide, as well as prices for the test and links to book. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.barcelona-metropolitan.com/api/amp/living/healthcare-in-catalunya/12-covid-19-testing-centers-in-barcelona/
I only found one that sells 6 at a time for $150. I only need one. Has anyone found an online place to just buy a single test?
I was planning on buying this two pack through the link on the United Airlines website: https://www.united.com/ual/en/us/fly/travel/covid-testing.html
The Points Guy discusses that the proctored BinaxNow test is now available in quantities less than a bundle of six and the article contains links to where to purchase.
TPG says:
“Optum is offering one kit for $50, two kits for $70 or three for $100. An Optum phone agent confirmed that tests may be shared with other travelers — a three-pack could cover a family of three, for example. I ordered a six-pack for $150 through eMed, which includes supervision for each test.”
I just did the eMed BinaxNOW test to come home from a trip to Ireland a few days ago. It was very easy! Downloaded the app, logged into the website on a laptop, and was connected with a person for the online supervision very quickly. I did this early in the morning, as I'd heard from friends that the waiting time at night can be hours. The person supervising your test walks you through the process step by step, watching and listening to make sure you do each step correctly. After your swab is done the person starts a digital timer and then they log off to go to another call while you wait. When the timer hits 15 minutes a new supervisor logs on with you to check your test and confirm the results. The results are sent to the app and to your email.
I did the test prior traveling home from Iceland, through eMed. I would recommend watching the video before doing the test. I also recommend taking 2 tests in case something goes wrong. I was able to do the test using a telephone only. I did not have any trouble getting through to an observer at eMed. The only person that looked at the results was the Delta gate agent at check in.
I bought a single one of these tests (actually two to a box) at Walmart for less than $20.
Paul,
Does your test include the telehealth visit and the certificate needed to return to the US or is it just for personal use?
BinaxNOW is a rapid test approved for use with supervision from certified eMed proctors via video chat to help with proper test procedure and accurate results.
No appointment is needed, tests are administered on-demand at your convenience.
In collaboration with eMed, the NAVICA app will display your test results in the form of a badge.
The reason the Walmart test is not approved is that it does not include the telehealth visit.
I just took the test 3 days ago from my hotel room in southern Albania—v easy and done in about 25 minutes. Now sitting in Munich airport for the final flight back to the US.
If you decide to use Binax, do take a spare. My wife’s test kit was missing the adhesive to seal the test so has to discard that and use another one
Thanks for all the information about the limits to the Walmart version of the test. The box and material inside says nothing about a telephone contact to monitor taking the test. I bought it just in case I started feeling ill and wanted to see if I might have a breakthrough infection (my wife and I have both been vaccinated). I've read these tests can give false results either way so I wasn't putting a lot of stock in whatever the results were.
If the monitored version of the test is so much more expensive, however, I could see doing a test run with the Walmart version first.

It appears as though people are complaining of extremely long wait times (3-4 hours or more) and once they are able to make contact they are only able to test one person and must start the process all over again for other members of the family. People are wasting a day or so of their vacation trying to get through.
We will be flying out of Zurich on September 21st and I was thinking of purchasing the $150 packet to use with our group of 4 adults. I'm rethinking that idea.
Regarding long wait time - I would say, it depends. I did mine 3 days ago and total wait time for me and for my wife I would estimate at between 2-3 minutes. My test was done around 1:30 PM CET? (Albanian time)
How long does it take for the Binax test to arrive once you place the order online?
Calimom, I ordered mine from emed.com and they fed ex them overnight. But once you order you have to wait for approval, which may take a few hours. so I would figure on 1-2 days after you order for them to arrive from emed.
About the Binax Test. We bought the 6-test kits for $150 plus an additional $16.50 for overnight shipping by FedEx. Although no signature is required, we made sure we were home because the kits need to be stored below 86 degrees. It has been hotter than that here in southern Oregon so we didn't want the box sitting on our porch for any length of time.
Just got back from Romania and thought I'd weigh in with my take on the tests.
I took one at home to try it out and then one before I left Romania.
Both times I was connected almost immediately. The proctor had to see my passport for ID and they carefully watch you to make sure you're doing it correctly. I had a little trouble using my tablet at home so I used my iPhone in Romania. They link you to a website if it doesn't go to the app within 15 minutes, but it did right away for me. I had to show the code when I checked in at Bucharest but not again.
If anyone is interested in Romania, they offer a quick test at the airport in Bucharest now.
