Better Now Than in Portugal

Well, it happened. I tested positive for Covid yesterday and we are supposed to be on a flight to Portugal on Friday. I had been testing at home and two brands and four tests showed that I was negative. However I was symptomatic so I wanted to be sure it was the flu instead of Covid. I went for a PCR yesterday and it’s definitely Covid. My husband has also obviously been exposed, so now we wait to see when he will get it. The silver lining to all of this is that I got it before we left. I would not have wanted to fly to Portugal only to spend it in quarantine and feeling like I did earlier this week.

So now to re-plan the rescheduled 2020 Portugal trip. I know, first world problems.

I’m so very sorry you’re ill. Hope this is a light case for you and yes hope you can reschedule. If you get a certificate of recovery that will be good for returning to the US for 90 days.

I'm sorry this happened to you but you are so right that it's better that this happened at home. A minor cold that would be ignorable and completely over in a few days at home becomes a major inconvenience if it's a Covid cold and you're trying unsuccessfully to get a negative test to fly days after your symptoms are gone.

Ugh. So sorry you have to reschedule your trip. When I'm getting ready to go out of the country I too test multiple times in the week leading up and then a PCR the day before departure (there is a testing spot near me that gives same-day PCR results if you have it done by 11 am). As disappointing as it would be to cancel at the last minute, it's exactly as you said, better at home than abroad.

We had Covid several days into our trip to Portugal. I had the slightest symptoms, the lightest cold, and it was Covid. My husband got it, too, so we spent our vacation dropping off our tour and in quarantine, and figuring out how to get home! Luckily we were in a nice hotel by the beach.

Thank you all. I had a fever and body aches the first couple of days and then it broke. Now I just have a little bit of mild cough and the sore throat is almost gone today. I do still notice that I tire easily and that would have been a bummer when I want to be going. We are going to wait at least two weeks to reschedule in case my husband comes down with symptoms or tests positive. Hopefully the US lifts the re-entry test requirement soon. I know that puts a lot of anxiety in all of us thinking about the return trip Russian roulette.

Thank you for the words of encouragement. Again, even though it’s a bummer to have happened at all, I’m glad that it happened now. Portugal will still be there. 😊

April, I am so sorry you are positive, but yes, the silver lining is that you are not positive in Portugal. We were. My husband tested positive on May 26 and is still there. Since he was doing well, I left while I was negative. If I had tested positive days later, the clock would have reset. It's very difficult to sort through the country requirements, our US requirements, and the airline requirements to return. We had planned to be gone extra time by paying bills, getting extra medications, etc. which is what I recommend for everyone. And of course, do not leave home without trip insurance although the insurance company has been a bit of a mixed bag. Hold times for airlines, the insurance company, basically almost everyone you would need to call are often more than an hour. Be sure you have a good phone plan. I could go on and on about the challenges we had to deal with. The latest return date for my husband, fingers crossed, is Tuesday, June 7.
