Recent Positive Experience with Allianz for Trip Cancellation

We had to cancel a June trip to Greece and The Netherlands scheduled for my husband, daughter, and myself from June 14 to July 5 due to some health issues. Our Chase Sapphire Reserve card provided reimbursement for airline and hotel penalties (about $1,700 total), but they do not reimburse for tickets to attractions. While the amount (about $83 each) wasn't that great, I wanted to file so I could learn what the process was like and whether our claims would be approved.

Our daughter had a one trip plan, and my husband and I have an annual plan, all through Allianz. The process was a bit of a pain, but I eventually figured it out. You need to fill the complete claim form in one session--I couldn't find a way to save and return. However, you can return to upload all of your supporting documents.

Our daughter's claim was approved and the reimbursement was in her bank within one day.

Ours took a little longer because they decided to send us a check for some reason, but still it was only about a week until we received the check.

I hope this is helpful. If you are interested in our experience with Chase Sapphire Trip Cancellation, my report on that process is here:

I had a great experience with Allianz. There is an option to purchase limited Allianz Travel Insurance when using American Airlines frequent flyer miles. Before our RS tour last year, our flight was diverted and delayed by one day due to a disruptive lunatic on board, causing the plane to land in the U.S. After filling out their online form and sending a screenshot of the $300 hotel bill and an email from AA showing the flight delay, Allianz reimbursed the cost with a check within the week.

Thanks, Barbara! I just filed my first ever claim also - I have the annual policy with Allianz as well. Mine also was not much - one hotel room cause by a flight cancellation (that the airline would not cover). It was fairly fast to fill out the online form and upload the documents. I think I did this on a Saturday and on Monday had an email that they would be direct depositing the amount within the next couple of days. And they did.

Like you, I thought of it as an easy intro to filing a bigger claim.

I think it depends on having all the documents to support the claim, which can be a little tricky. If your claim is due to illness, you need documents with your doctor's name, address, and phone number, and a letter on letterhead and/or after visit summaries that show the date of symptom onset, symptoms, diagnosis, and I made sure to have a statement recommending against travel. I also asked my doctor to put a timeframe on the letter, so it would be clear I couldn't just postpone by a day or two.

Also, be sure to redact any personal information such as birthdate, medical record number, other medical conditions, in your after visit summaries. That was advised on the Chase claim site, but not by Allianz. Allianz accepted the documents where I blacked out that unnecessary info.
