Recent Positive Chase Sapphire Card Trip Cancellation Experience

We had to cancel a trip to Greece and The Netherlands scheduled for my husband, daughter, and myself from June 14 to July 5 due to some health issues. Overall, our claim with Chase Sapphire went well and money was in our bank account within 9 days of submitting the claim. See below for more details if you are interested.

We had paid for all expenses with my husband's Chase Sapphire Preferred Card, so we used the insurance to cover our penalty charges for Sky Express flights round trip Athens to Naxos & one-way Athens to Amsterdam, and for our first hotel. Most other charges could be cancelled without penalty.

The process was a bit of a pain. On the plus side, you can start a claim and save and return to it if you need to find more documents, which is very helpful. When you are ready, you click the button to submit. Once you submit, you can no longer see what you requested, so I recommend taking some screen shots or being sure to write down all details. I soon realized that the same document would satisfy a number of their categories that required document uploads (ie cancellation policy, amount refunded, penalties, itinerary, etc) but you need to save the document with a different title to post in each category. A bit of a pain, but fine once I figured it out.

I submitted on 6/19, heard that the claim was approved on 6/26, and the money was refunded on 6/28. Phew!

Barbara, it's nice to hear a positive story. Thanks for sharing, and sorry your trip had to be canceled.
One question- did you have other trip insurance, also? I was wondering if two policies would compete with each other on not paying?
Best wishes for rescheduling.

Pat, We had a single trip Allianz policy for our daughter because she doesn't have health coverage in Europe, and we have an annual Allianz policy for ourselves because even though our Senior Advantage would cover medical expenses, I understand there can be quite a delay.

My understanding is that as long as you don't claim for the same expenses with both policies, you are fine. There is a place to report at Chase if you claimed and got reimbursed or partially reimbursed from another plan, that you could use for example if you made a claim and the other plan only covered part of your expenses. But nowhere did it state in the Chase policy that you have to use other insurance first.

Chase does not reimburse for nonrefundable attraction tickets, so we will use the Allianz policy to cover those expenses, which were less than 100 euros for each of us. I will report on that after I hear back on that claim. Also, both Chase and Allianz told me that we can be reimbursed for flight credits IF they expire before we can use them. When that happens, we can file another claim. We are doing our best to use as much as we can. It will be hard for our daughter though, because she is still working.

I'm steadily improving, and have scheduled a mother-daughter week in London in August. My husband has conflicts then, so it will just be the two of us. Fingers crossed we can make the trip, but as of now it looks good. Our long trip for the three of us will have to wait until 2026.

Barbara. that is very interesting. I usually am pretty good about using my credits but that is very good to know, just in case. Thanks!

Mardee, I'll fully believe it when it works! I think we will have a chance to find out for our daughter and will report, but that won't be until early 2026.

Thanks for the information. Can you share whether you used a Chase Sapphire Preferred or Reserve card?

It's the Chase Sapphire Preferred card--I updated above. It covered our transportation and accommodation costs. They don't cover attraction tickets.

We also have had a good experience with Allianz, which I will post about soon. Our daughter had the one trip plan and my husband and I have the annual plan through Allianz. Allianz is covering our attraction tickets (for example Anne Frank House, Acropolis and Acropolis Museum).
