Another positive Allianz experience: Expired flight credits

Last year I described our positive experience with Allianz when we had to cancel a trip:

https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/budget-tips/recent-positive-experience-with-allianz-for-trip-cancellation

At that time, they told me that we would be able to file a claim for any flight credit that we were unable to use after it expired. While I was able to use all of my flight credit, my daughter's schedule made it impossible for her to use all of hers--she had about $1,000 worth of credit that expired. Her one trip policy included $1,000 trip cancellation coverage, and we made a $94 claim last year to cover some nonrefundable tickets. We were just informed that Allianz will cover about $914 of her expired flight credit.

It only took 3 Allianz business days to process the claim.

Great news, Barbara! It is good to hear your positive experience, because I have Allianz insurance, too!

Hi Barbara, that's good to hear. I'm sure every policy varies depending on what coverage you get, I hadn't heard about expiring credits being covered before so now I'm curious! To confirm, last year after your trip was cancelled your daughter made a claim under the "trip cancellation" clause of her policy. At the time Allianz reimbursed a portion of it (for tickets) and said that if the flight credits expired they could be claimed those at a later date (I assume those details were also listed in the policy language somewhere). Curious what info she had to provide the company once the credits expired and if Allianz had any time limit to make the claim (e.g. most flight credits with Delta require you to book within one year).

Hi CL. I didn't see anything in the policy about expired flight credits, so I called Allianz back in June when we made the original claim. With Allianz, you reopen the claim by adding additional supporting documents. I cannot recall if there was a one-year time limit after the cancellation in June 2025, but the flight credit expired one year after purchase, so there was plenty of time to make the claim within one year. They have a whole list of documents you can submit, and I just used commonsense on what would support our claim. When we reopened, we included:

--Our original etickets from United

--A copy of the credit card bill with the United ticket purchase

--Our flight cancellation email from United showing that we would receive credit, but no refund

--We used some of my daughter's credits for a trip to London, and when we booked that trip we got a summary from United of credits used and credit remaining so I uploaded that

--A short statement explaining the claim that I uploaded under "other" documents

--I also re-uploaded my doctor's letter and visit summary with my diagnosis, but that probably wasn't needed since they already had those documents

I hope this helps.
