Romania itinerary help

Hi! My husband will be in Romania in mid/ late October for 8 days/ 8 nights. We are flying in/ out of Bucharest but want to focus on Transylvania and smaller towns, and will have a car. We do have the RS Central Europe book but it's pretty condensed and realize that there may be lots of great places out there that aren't covered in the book. We're also researching travel blogs, etc to get idea.

We aren't go-go-go travelers, because we get to travel a lot, so would prefer 3 nights in most places and take day-trips from there. Our current thinking is to fly into Bucharest and pick up the car, then have 3 nights in Sibiu and 3 nights in Brasov (in either order). We will sleep in Bucharest our last night, as we fly back home the next morning.

Do Sibiu and Brasov make sense as home bases? We also want to check out Sighisoara- should we sleep there for a night? Or is it better as a day trip? Or are there other places you'd recommend?

For context, we're in our 40s, like nature, pretty towns, and good food. We're also happy finding a cafe for an afternoon and just people watching and reading. We will be for sure checking out some of the castles in the area, too. We'd like to do some light hiking/ walks.

Thank you for any suggestions!

Hoping someone replies to this post. I am doing the exact same trip at the exact same time, crazy!

We just came back from a great Gate 1 bus tour of Romania for six nights. We loved Sibiu and Brasov.
We did Sighisoara quite well in half a day, no need to spend the night there. Also, you can visit Bran (Dracula's Castle).

Also recommend Corvin Castle, Hunedoara, Piata Cetății, Sinaia and at least half a day in Bucharest.

Thank you! Would 3 nights each in Brasov and Sibiu be recommended? If you had an extra night in either, where would you add it?

Mardee, just plan your trip and send it to me - save me the trouble. LOLOL.

Coffeegirl, I am looking at possibly fall 2025 or 2026. I will have more time than you but am a slow traveler. I am starting with the concept of 3 nights in each of 5 (or 6) towns (plus Bucharest) but haven’t filled out my days yet. But I anticipate not being back so I want to cover as much as I can (since I have all the time I want). I will be very interested in your perceptions.

Thanks, Mardee and Texas Travelmom. I've scoured the trip reports a bit, but finding most of the information to be about places that are already in the book (and traveler's recommendations for them). I'm also wondering if there are towns/ places/ sights in Transylvania that aren't covered in the book that others have enjoyed. I'm sure there must be!

At this point, I think we're leaning towards 3 nights in Sibiu and 4 in Brasov, plus one night in Bucharest, with lots of day trips. I might research Timisoara a bit more to see if it's worth a night.

Thanks! I have a lot more planning to do but will post a trip report when we return in October.

Hahaha!!! Or vice versa!

BTW, I just realized I put the wrong years in my post. My tentative dates are actually late 2025 or 2026, so whichever one of us goes there first can do all the planning. :-)

Spent so much time working in Romania. sounds a perfect plan. Visit the Black Church in Brasov. and travel to Bran. to see Draculas castle. Hire your car at the airport is perfect idea.
big tip driving there. Look out for horse drawn carts.. itsyour fault if you hit them regardless and also false police stops. keep passports very very safe along with spare cash and cards.
have fun and enjoy.

Hi Mardee and Acechrist- I have a friend who apparently went last October. They are big hikers and said the village of Magura was fantastic for fall colors. It's near Bran Castle. She said the Zarnesti Gorge hike was beautiful.
