Walking/Hiking women shoes for Scotland September

I am wondering if I need hiking waterproof shoes in addition to good walking shoes for a 2 1/2 week trip to Scotland. Most of our trip will be in cities (Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, Oban) but we will be doing some day trips to Isle of Sky and Isle of Mull/Iona plus a visit to the Pitlochry Highland Games. I am used to wearing Merrill’s or Keens on previous trips which have served me well. But, this is our first trip to Scotland where we may have more rain than in the past.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I wear my most comfortable walking shoes and use waterproof spray on them beforehand. This has worked well for me. When I have purchased shoes just because they're waterproof, they haven't been as comfortable. But, we all have different feet.....

I was on Skye, Mull and Iona last month and spent a total of 3 weeks in Scotland, and the only shoes I brought for hiking/walking were my Oboz Low Leather walking shoes, which are water resistant. They did a great job - occasionally they got a little damp around the edges but nothing major. I was lucky in that the weather was relatively dry while I was there.

Brooks makes a Ghost GTX which I wore in Ireland. Both Merrill and Keen make waterproof shoes that aren’t necessarily hiking boots. And walking around in wet shoes equals being miserable in my opinion.

Hi there
Last September we spent two weeks in Ireland and one week in Scotland. I took my waterproof Ryka light hiking boots. I wore them any day we knew we would be outdoors. They were great and kept me dry even during one very rainy downpour. Have a wonderful trip!

I'm a little late to this conversation but here goes. Spent almost 3 weeks in Scotland last October. A good friend who had just been there encouraged me to take my beloved, broken-in, Redback ankle boots that look like Blundstones . These are probably 10 - 12 years old. I polished them up and wore them every single day. When it rained, or we were walking on rough road, or in cities - they were great because I'd already walked miles in them and my feet love them. Really, nobody in Scotland looked at my feet but people on our RS tour wanted to know where I got them.

My point being, take a loved pair of sturdy shoes/low hikers with a some tread on the bottom. You'll be on your feet a lot and Scotland is an unpretentious place, in my opinion. We had some very nice weather but it will rain. That little bit of extra height around my ankles kept me cozy and dry. Especially on our walk to a restaurant in Oban during an exciting storm.

I don't know where you live, but here in the Pacific Northwest, everything I wear here was perfect for Scotland. Including my old boots.

I agree with several of the comments above about taking the shoes you walk well in, but one more point: Don't forget the socks.

Socks are almost as important as the shoes. Take socks that work well with the shoes. And carry an extra pair in a plastic bag, so you can change if your shoes/socks/feet get very wet. Dry socks in wet shoes are much better than wet socks in dry shoes - and much lighter to carry.
