I will be there in early December. What’s your favorite restaurant for Wiener Schnitzel? Authentic and not too touristy? Thanks!
I highly encourage you to venture out to residential neighborhoods and try a local restaurant. Also, if you are ok with pork, try the pork ones as they are actually more tender.
This is the best. It is off the beaten path. It is behind the LOCAL'S Favorite Xmas Market - Karlsplatz (def worth seeing as its all local handcrafted items). You can def find this restaurant by using your phone and Google Maps. You can read reviews and see photos on TripAdvisor - def make a reservation - we called them as it's the only way to make a RSVP (You can't do it online). They do have a webpage you can see the menu. ---- It is behind Karlsplatz - in a neighborhood. WIENER WIAZ HAUS
Emily is our Vienna expert. She posted this two years ago https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/austria/best-schnitzel-in-vienna-read-this
@Horsewoofie, the link does not work :(
I googled and found the link - https://www.falstaff.com/at/news/top-10-best-of-wiener-schnitzel-in-wien
I can also recommend Anzengruber.
and the original link worked for me a minute ago
be sure what you want, and what you're getting. Schnitzel is a method of preparation but depending on where you are you may have a choice of pork, turkey or veal. Or no choice.
When we were in Vienna we took our hotel’s suggestion and walked a short distance to Restaurant Fromme Helene, Josefstädter Strasse 15 Lange Gasse 33, Vienna 1080. We aren’t foodies and their recommendation and proximity to the hotel along with being seated with no reservations were a big plus but we enjoyed our pork schnitzel meal a lot. It was a very large serving, crispy, tasty and well prepared.
We returned another evening and enjoyed another fine meal, friendly service and reasonable prices. FWIW the restaurant has existed for 50 years and current reviews still seem favorable. Safe travels.
The restaurant "Wiener Wiaz Haus is recommendable, had lunch a few times, never dinner. Visiting Vienna I usually always go back to Karlsplatz at least once. Keep in mind if you see this as a concern, the restaurant is a " cash only" establishment.
My favourite place is located closer to where I stay, ie Westbahnhof area. The restaurant is Schnitzel Wirt on Neubaugasse.
Both these places get both locals and tourists, quite reasonable in price. Great atmosphere and staff in Schnitzel Wirt. This is also "cash only", the sigh out front attests to that policy.
Denny doesn't say when he was in Vienna, but in 2015, our hotel also recommended Fromme Helene, and we ate there at least 3 times. As much as I liked the schnitzel, I liked the pike perch even better.
Alas, every place in Vienna which makes into tourist guide books or is frequently referenced in travel forums like this becomes overcrowded by tourists and far less enjoyable due to the long lines of people willing to wait outside.
This is also true for Schnitzelwirt which is swamped by tourists now. Just three years ago it was a decent place where you could walk in and find a spot to seat. If this continues they will likely lose all local customers.
Other places where queuing is usual and tourists have become the majority: Plachutta, Café Sacher, Café Central, Figlmüller, Demel, Café Landtmann, ...
