We are on a river cruise this week and just realized we have “free time” in Vienna. I cut up my RS guidebook and left Vienna at home as I thought our excursion was going to be all day.
What are some things we must do??
Thank you in advance!!!
What interests you? Museums, history, art, culture, food.......?
Here's a suggestion.....take a look at the hop on hop off bus and where it stops. Those are the most popular places in Vienna. Then decide which ones you want to see and visit them.
You could also take the HOHO tour to get an overview of Vienna.
Another suggestion is to look at Youtube videos pertaining to traveling to Vienna. There are plenty.
Lastly, right on this website there is an entire section on Vienna:

I happen to be in Vienna right now for the umpteenth time.
Great ideas!!!!
We like beautiful churches (or other religious places), unique museums and cool experiences.
4 active adults.
We are also foodies so not opposed to a food or wine tour.
Thank you!!!!
You can begin by watching this 90 minute video by Joseph Koerner , a professor of Art and History at Harvard . Having a basic knowledge and understanding of a place informs you about getting something from a visit , albeit a very short one - https://youtu.be/AFZBOTgL_Hk?si=AER-Vb9-LWiDbqNA
Have a look at my DIY food crawl - https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/austria/a-viennese-food-crawl
You could easily cover this crawl in six hours.
Alternatively, consider slowing down and enjoying Vienna the way that Viennese do - in a coffeehouse. I love Café Prückel (great outdoor tables too), Kaffee Alt Wien, Café Schwarzenberg and Cafe Landtmann. A lunch at the Palmenhaus is perfect as well on a sunny day.
I also can highly recommend the Wien Museum, which is free and excellent. A visit to the National Library (Prunksaal) and the Jesuitenkirche are musts for me.
We ended up walking the town and hopping into the Kunsthistorishes Museum for a few hours. It was perfect!!! Thanks for all the responses.
