Traveling with a friend to visit the town of Werfen to hike the trail to see the Sound of Music location. Looking forward to seeing a concert, staying in safe areas and using public transportation is requested.
Guidance is appreciated. Thanks, Kay
Hard to believe, but there are no unsafe areas.
We visited Vienna and Salzburg in Aug 2025; we did not feel unsafe at any time and used public transport. Our trip report might be useful reference for your planning (parts 1-6): https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/trip-reports/trip-report-austria-bavaria-aug-sep-2025
When in Salzburg which is very safe you will have free public transport with the mobility pass issued by your accommodation.
Note that there is a difference between Salzburg (the city) and Salzburgerland (the much bigger region). Werfen is in Salzburgerland not city, but close enough. The railway station is across the river at the south end of the village. At least one train per hour, sometimes 2 or 3, in each direction.
The village is sat higher than the river, the main road skirts around it so there is no heavy traffic through the centre, which is a nice place to sit outside for dinner or a drink.
The Mobility Ticket is available in both city and Land https://www.guestmobilityticket.at/en/
