There was an old thread about getting from Hallstatt to Vienna by public transit. Can someone post recent experience? Thanks.
Go to https://www.oebb.at/en/ and enter Hallstatt Bahnhst as starting point and Wien as destination. You will be provided with a variety of train connections, usually with one change in Attnang-Puchheim, if you have unchecked Direct trains only.
If you search for direct trains, there is only one per day, departing around 6pm.
Note that Hallstatt's train station is on the other side of the lake. For every departing/arriving train there is a matching ferry connection about 15 minutes in advance. Beware, the price for the ferry has to be paid in cash.
Where are you staying in Vienna? It makes a difference.

After a trip of more than 3 hours it does not make much of a difference at what train station you arrive in Vienna as all of them have a direct connection to the subway.
Depending on the location, I might recommend Westbahn over OeBB, that's all.
Thanks for this helpful information. I'm flexible about what time to leave Hallstatt. I'd be going to the Vienna airport. I'm planning to stay in an airport hotel overnight and have an 8 am flight the next morning (Sept 30).

In that case you can catch an express train directly to Vienna International Airport, having one change either in Linz or Attnang-Puchheim.
E.g.
Hallstatt dep. 2:32pm REX 70, Linz arr. 4:41pm dep. 5:17pm RJX 565, Airport arr. 6:57pm
Hallstatt dep. 3:07pm R 70, Attnang-Puchheim arr. 4:52pm dep. 5:01pm RJ 743, Airport arr. 7:27pm
Thanks so much!
