Train Station in Hallstatt

We will be traveling to Hallstatt in late September. Much has been written on the RS website about the train station in Hallstatt being very small and nothing more than a connection point for the ferry to the town. What I would like to know is if the train station is manned. Will we be able to buy train tickets to travel from Hallstatt to Vienna at the Hallstatt train station or do we need to buy them in advance? Will there be someone at the train station in Hallstatt to sell us train tickets?

Thank you.

hugh,

As Laura mentioned, the Hallstatt station is not staffed. I bought my outbound tickets in advance in Salzburg, prior to going to Hallstatt. It's possible that there may be a travel agency in Hallstatt that sells tickets, or perhaps on that particular train you can buy from the Conductor? After all, how do the people of Hallstatt buy tickets when they want to travel?

According to the Austrian Rail website (here) there is a (one) ticket automat (Fahrkartenautomat) at the Hallstatt station, in the waiting room.

You can also take a bus from Lahn (½ km walk south on the lakeside pedestrian road) to Obertraun-Dachsteinhöhlen Bahnhof. That station is manned for ticket sales (I bought a ticket there in 2009), from 5 AM to 9 PM daily.

But, it never hurts to buy tickets in advance. If you can commit to a specific train, you will probably even get a lower price than buying them at the station just before departure.

I bought the ticket from the conductor without any additional fee.
