Trying to buy a 1 way ticket from Hallstatt to Vienna

I am trying to find out how to buy 2- 1 way tickets from Hallstatt to Vienna. I have read people saying there is a ticket machine at the station and people that have said there is not a ticket machine. Some say buy from conductor some say not. I tried to find the answer from DB Bahn? but they just told me to call (too expensive). I looked on the Bahn site and found a train at 12:32 for Vienna but can not purchase on line nor find out the cost. Can ANYONE tell me if there is a ticket machine at the Hallstatt station, do you buy from the conductor or just how do I obtain these tickets?

  • Rick's guidebook says that there is a ticket machine. You'll see it on the way into town, if you come by train.
  • You can also buy the tickets in another town/train station.
  • There's also no deadline to buy tickets online, if you want to do it right before departure from your hotel, for instance.

You can't buy it on the Bahn site because the Bahn only sells tickets for journeys that are partly or wholly in Germany. For advance tickets in Austria see http://www.oebb.at/en/index.jsp. Note that you can't buy tickets more than 90 days or so in advance.

Thank you everyone! I went to the OBB website and found tickets for the date, times, costs etc. MOST importantly I found my way to "Services" which included "Services at the station" which then yielded "Station Information". It was there that I put in "Hallstatt" which then told me that there was a ticket vending machine and that it was located in Obertraun which is where the station is for Hallstatt. I'm sure you guys all knew that but I didn't! So, maybe this will clear up any confusion for other people looking for the train station in Hallstatt! Thanks again for ALL your help.

The last time I was in Hallstatt a few years ago, the Hallstatt rail station was just across the lake from the town. I suppose that could technically be considered Obertraun. It's not staffed and I don't recall it having a ticket Kiosk at the time. That must be somewhat new.

Ken, your reply about there not being a ticket vending machine at the Hallstatt train station when you were there is one of the reasons I have been confused about this matter. I have read that Rick Steves said there was a ticket vending machine and have read that other people said there isn't one. Once again, I am back in the confused zone about this ticket vending machine at the Hallstatt train station!!!!!!

I don't know if there is a ticket automat at the Hallstatt station or not, but if there is not one, I can't imagine that you would be in any trouble if you got on at Hallstatt and bought the ticket from the conductor.

Obertraun is a town several km beyond Hallstatt (going south from Bad Ischl) and it does have a station. You can get to the Obertraun station by taking a bus from Lahn (1 km south from Hallstatt on the lakeside road, near the incline and parking lots at the end of the tunnel). When I was in Obertraun in 2009, the ticket office was manned.

Looking at the Austrian Rail information for the "Hallstatt" Bahnhof, it says there is 1 Fahrkartenautomat in the waiting room of the Bahnhof. It gives the place (Ort) of the station as Obertraun, but that is just the town where the station is "technically" located (because it is across the lake from, and not in, Hallstatt). There are actually three Bahnhöfe (Hallstatt, Dachsteinhöhlen, and Koppenbrühlerhöhle) in Obertraun.

Thank you Lee and sorry I took so long to reply! Another thing I read on the OBB site under "station information" was that if you couldn't get a ticket that there would be a vending machine in the back of the train. I will soon find out and can not wait to write about this (and the outcome) when we return home! But, you're probably right about not getting into trouble. The bottom line is that I can find a ticket on line. Once we get into Hallstatt and get some wifi, we will probably end up ordering a ticket then. I just wanted to have and know my options.

I don't know about Hallstatt but I was in a small village in Austria this summer that didn't have any machines on the platform. But when I got on the train - there was a machine to buy a ticket. They will have some way to get a ticket on site.

Could you not buy them at any other OBB train station you might be at any time prior to Halstatt?

Thanks again everyone for the suggestions and help! Mendy, the other thing I read on the OBB site was that if there is no ticket vending machine at a station then there will be one in the back of the train so you can get one there. Even if the ticket vending machine on the train was broken, then I would be able to purchase one at the Attnang-Puchheim stop. Stan yes, I would be able to if I was at an OBB station prior to going to Hallstatt, however I will be in Prague before going Hallstatt. The bottom line on this subject is that I now know that I will be able to get one and as Lee said, "I doubt anyone would get into trouble" if they get on a train without a ticket because there are several ways to obtain one. Drillerdoc's suggestion to go to www.oebb.at is the way to go for any information one needs for riding the rails in Austria.
