December trip

Planning an Austrian trip for 5 days in December for the christmas markets and just to experience the place! Don't mind the cold or snow!

Current thoughts are fly into Vienna to spend a few days- train to Salzburg and stay for a few days with a half day trip to visit Hallstatt.

Any recommendations from anyone or has anyone gone in December before and can offer any advice?

Given you only have a few days (is that 4 or 5 nights in Austria?), and that you need to be in Vienna the night before you return home (assuming you will be using a return ticket), you need to decide if you will split your stay in Vienna, or go immediately to Salzburg on arrival.

Sorry for that horribly run on sentence.

5 days in Austria. Stay in Vienna. Maybe, just maybe run to Salzburg for 2 nights max.

Or day trips to Bratislava or Melk. Heck, a day trip or overnight to Budapest isn't dumb. But make sure you do Vienna long enough to do it justice.

Provide arrival and departure dates and I bet you get better suggestions as its hard to understand 5 days.

Hi,

Please add the dates, where you fly in from and fly out from and to. This would be very helpful.

Christmas Market Queen of Vienna and a few other places reporting for duty.

I also thought I wrote a report on the Wolfgangsee Christmas markets but I can’t find it right now.

With five days, I suggest two in Vienna and two in Salzburg with a travel day in the middle of. In Vienna, I suggest to visit the markets at Karlsplatz, Spittelberg, Freyung, Schönbrunn and the Rathaus. You can do this in two days, but you won’t have time for traditional sights. On the third day, go early to Salzburg and spend that afternoon/evening at the market in the main square. Day four, go to Wolfgangsee, starting at Strobl and then work your way by ferry to Sankt Gilgen (stop in St. Wolfgang in between). On day five visit what I think is the best market I’ve ever seen at Hellbrunn. Definitely skip Hallstatt. The market pales in comparison to these other locations and Wolfgangsee is iconic for markets.

Happy to answer any questions.

For such a short trip, why not just stay and enjoy Vienna? This sounds awfully rushed. Or if you feel the itch, one short daytrip like Melk. There are numerous Youtube videos about Christmas in Vienna so you can see what you'll be getting into.

Remember Rick's motto, assume you will return.
