Musikverein is a wonderful hall - a must-do. Yes, I would get tickets as soon as they go on sale for your travel dates. There are other venues that I am sure people will mention. One of my favorite things to do while traveling is to go to music conservatories (University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna) for student recitals, which I'd think will be abundant in May. Check on church concerts as well.
I would definitely try to get tickets in advance. Along with the Vienna Philharmonic at the Musikverein, I would suggest the Vienna State Opera or the Wiener Staatsoper.

You need to enter the date of the fist day of your stay.
It is very advisable to buy tickets in advance. It is usually better to buy them directly from the venue and not from a reseller. I use the link above only for getting an overview, not for actually buying tickets. (This does not mean that this company has a bad reputation or is known for shady business practices.)
