Classical music concerts in Salzburg in May

Looking for recommendations for a classical music concert on a Monday evening in late May in Salzburg. We will be staying at the Hotel Elefant in Old Town. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

It depends on what you are looking for! If you're a serious classical music aficionado and want a lengthy concert in a historically appropriate setting, Rick has his suggestions for that in the Salzburg Book.

We were in Salzburg last July, however, and did the Mozart concert and dinner at the castle. Some people say it's touristy, but hey, we are tourists, aren't we? I thought the meal was quite good and it was outside with an absolutely stunning view. Then we listened to some really talented musicians in a lovely room in the castle. I went with my two 20-something kids and their friend and we all enjoyed our evening immensely.

Here's a thread from a few years ago with more info... https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/austria/mozart-dinner-and-concert-recommendation-in-salzburg

I'll add my usual suggestion: Check what's on at the Mozarteum, one of the most highly respected music conservatories in the world.

I will readily admit I am neither a classical music aficionado nor a musician, but my appreciation of classical music is well above that of the typical American. I have season tickets to my local philharmonic, and I typically prioritize finding a "real" (i.e., non-"touristy") classical concert when I visit a city. For example, I'll catch two performances by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra while in Amsterdam in a couple of weeks, and I'm building a trip to eastern Czechia in October around the Janáček Brno festival that celebrates Czech composer Leoš Janáček. With those disclosures, I will say that I rather enjoyed the concert mentioned by Elizabeth above, as well as the optional accompanying dinner on a terrace at the fortress that does indeed have beautiful views. In fact, I have attended the fortress concert twice (one regular performance and one Advent performance). It features accomplished musicians playing a variety of classical music pieces in a very atmospheric setting. It's lovely.

Other options:

It's not a Monday, but if you happen to be around Wed May 27 through Friday May 29, there are some interesting-looking performances by Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano at the Großes Festspielhaus. https://www.kulturvereinigung.com/de/Konzerte/Veranstaltungskalender

Concerts at the Mozarteum Concert Hall: https://www.kulturvereinigung.com/de/Konzerte/Veranstaltungskalender

At the Mozarteum University on May 18, two one-act Puccini operas will be performed at the Max Schlereth Saal at a college performance price! https://shop.eventjet.at/de/mozarteum/event-group/b0212a61-63c9-49ab-91bb-79359fb8053a
