Christmas in Salzburg

My family and I (me, my husband, my four kids ages 10-17) will be just outside Salzburg (in Teisendorf, Germany, to be precise), arriving Dec. 21 and leaving Dec. 26. Especially for those who have been there at that time of year, what ideas can you give me for things to see/do, places to eat that would still be open (I'm guessing nothing is open on Christmas Day? I'll probably plan to cook our meals that day ... we're in a place with a kitchen), tips or suggestions — anything would be helpful! Thank you!

The Red Bull Hangar is fun, especially if you have a rainy day. And it’s free.

In Salzburg, the Christmas markets will be open, even on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day just with reduced hours.

You might take a drive over to Berchtesgaden. The town is lovely and the salt mine tour is fun.

I would actually guess most restaurants should be open on Christmas Day (25th). The more important day in German speaking countries is Christmas Eve (24th), where everything will be closed from early afternoon onwards - except restaurants run by immigrants maybe (Turks, Arabs, Asians).
Be sure to make a reservation in advance for the 25th - asap would be best.
Chances are that at least some museums and other leisure activities will be open as well - except again for the second half of the 24th.

Thank you all! Knowing that things are more likely to be closed on the 24th is helpful. We can just visit the groceries and bakeries ahead of time and get cozy in our apartment for the afternoon through Christmas morning!

I am not familiar with Teisendorf, but I would immediately make reservation for Mittagessen (11:30-13:00) 25 or 26 December, both German holidays. Maybe a local tourist office can help. Chances are everything is booked. I don't know how you are travelling, but go south into Austria for snow. Großarltal, Oertauern etc.

will you be driving into Austria? Except for a very short stretch near Salzburg you'll need an Austrian Vignette on any Austrian motorway... cameras watch.
