Water? Ice? Stomach issues...?

Hi, Rick says to use bottled water to even rush your teeth- so does that mean in all restaurants that we should order bottled water? Also what about drinking coffee or tea- and getting ice in our drinks?? My cocktail will need ice! Am I out of luck on that one?
Also Rick mentioned to prescriptions to take with us in case there's a stomach upset- so we have those...
Def don't want to make a mistake!!!

We leave in 2 days!!!!
Thanks for your input!

Hi Barbie -

Rick is right, stick with bottled water at all times. It’s not to say the water is bad, although it might be, but it’s certainly different to what you are accustomed to and that in itself can throw your stomach off. Worst case scenario you could be horrifically ill so it’s not worth the risk. Make sure your water bottle seal isn’t broken when you buy it too.

Ice in drinks is potentially risky too. Invest in some whisky stones and chill them in the freezer if there’s a fridge in your room as an alternative? Ice cream is similarly off the menu too I’m afraid!

Oh yes, and no singing in the shower!

The good news is that bottled water is cheap. In August, small bottles were 10 TL when I bought it in little markets and 30 TL when I bought it at kiosks in tourist areas. At the time, that was $0.30 - $0.90.

My friend needed her prescription meds when she got quite ill with a stomach bug. I never needed my prescription, but was glad occasionally to have some Immodium or Pepto Bismol chewables.

You might be hard pressed to find an American style cocktail with ice in Turkey, so consider branching out to try new things (Efes beer, raki, ayran). Most reputable hotels and restaurants probably use filtered water to make ice, but I personally would not risk it. The restaurants I went to brought bottled water if you ordered water with your meal. As noted in prior replies, bottled water is inexpensive and widely available in large bottles you can use to refill smaller bottles for daily use. Locals are used to the minerals and water quality, your belly may not be. So yes, you should brush your teeth with bottled water and avoid raw veggies that may have been washed in local water. And pack some chewable Pepto tablets or Imodium, that's not the kind of thing you want to track down in an emergency situation.

I followed bottled water at all times and had no difficulties. Hotels provide 2 bottles to start with each day, and water is easy and cheap to purchase.

The Turks drink bottled water, not just visitors. The pipes are very old. It’s not like Mexico where you have to be wary of fruit and vegetable skin due to soil bacteria. So you’ll probably be okay.
Pepto is good, but Imodium is what you need for a real case of Ottoman revenge.

Would you mind telling me what exact medicine your prescription was for? Thank you!
