I'll be in Turkey in March 2025 and will need to get money from the ATM. I'm a little confused with TL. I would like to take out $200.00 in TL and the conversion rate on Onada is about 7,000 TL.
Would I enter 7,000TL into the ATM machine?
I'm good with Pounds and Euros but this is new to me.
If you want 7000 lira then you enter 7000 in the ATM. Just keep in mind that the current exchange rate might not be the same as the exchange rate in March, Turkey has had a bit of inflation recently.
Yep, just choose 7,000TL. Most ATM's will give you a choice of lira, euros, or dollars. Just choose lira.
Badger is right. Inflation is high in Turkey, and the exchange rate changes frequently.
Some of the Turkish ATMs have upper limits on withdrawals, you'll find that out when you try taking out money. Also be mindful of the fee - there are many posts in the Turkey part of the forum that discuss which ATMs may be less expensive than others. Also, the largest paper bill is a 200 TL note (about $5.50 US today) so if you take out 7000 TL you're going to have a big wad of cash. Depending on where you're going, you may not need a lot of cash (e.g., Istanbul is pretty credit card friendly).
The best fees for ATMs are in the post offices.
Additionally, when I was in Turkey in August 2024, I was not able to get an amount of my own choosing. The machines gave me that option, but I wound up having to select an amount from the menu. Other visitors, though, have not experienced this.
Sometimes the ATMs run out of money too. Just know that all of these things can happen, but you always have an alternative.
Many places will give you prices in euros. Just ask for the lira equivalent. Don't pay euros.
And I used more cash than I thought I would outside of Istanbul.
