Turkey - passport validity opinions needed

Hi all!

A friend and I are going to Turkey in October for two weeks. First trip overseas - yay!

We are supposed to arrive on October 16. The Turkish government says: "You are kindly advised to have a travel document/passport valid for at least 6 months as from the date of your arrival in Türkiye." Our own government confirms that as well. If my math is right, which it rarely is, my passport should not expire before April 16, 2025. My passport actually expires on May 30, 2025. So then I SHOULD be OK. But I am still a bit apprehensive that I am cutting it kinda close. First-trip jitters?

Do you folks think I should renew my passport or is 1.5 months plenty of cushion?

Thank you !!

I think you are okay. There is an online passport renewal option that might also work well for you.

This is the service / database that the airlines use when they check your passport prior to getting on the plane. If it says you are okay, then I would not worry. If it says that you are not okay, then they wont let you on the plane. https://www.iatatravelcentre.com/

From the Canadian government site: Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the duration of stay, and Tourism visa: not required for stays of up to 90 days in a 180-day period. They get their information straight from the Turkish government site. I don’t think you are cutting it close. Even if a flight gets cancelled you still have a month and a half, but if it worries you then renew it. I did mine a month ago, and had it back in less than two weeks.

Thanks, everyone. I should have added that I am indeed a Canadian national, and Canadians do not need a tourist visa to enter Turkey (this is a new development).

So it looks like the consensus is that I should be fine . . .

Thank you!

The calculations in the OP and the subsequent posts are all looking at the start of the visit.

I see that the planned end of the visit is two weeks later.

If I had this much time I'd be renewing my passport right away - they are now being returned quickly in the US, I hope that's true in Canada too.

Some border officials will assume, plane tickets notwithstanding, that you might stay as long as you are permitted to, in which case you might be declined.

Not saying that that will happen, but that's what I would do with the passports.

I am not a Canadian national, but I am also heading to Turkey in the fall, and I must admit that I am at pains to understand the issue at hand.

Turkey's requirements are clear: travelers are required to have a valid passport with six months' validity at the time of entry. Period. According to the Canadian government, this should be six months beyond the duration of the stay. The OP flies in on October 16, so she is good until April 16. Her passport does not expire until a month and a half later after April 16. She is only going to be in the country for two weeks. Presumably she will have proof of a return/onward ticket. When she flies out two weeks later, her passport will still have more than six months' validity on it (about seven). What is the problem?

You cannot penetrate the mind of an airline official in your hometown or a Turkish border official. That is why there are official rules in place, and they are very explicit. And according to these rules, you're perfectly fine. Even if your flight is delayed by a day. Or two.

I would not renew unless you're really anxious and just would rather not lose sleep over it. But I don't think there's anything to lose sleep over.
