Isn’t the OP looking for a guide, not a guide book but a human being type of guide?

I travelled Istandbul independently, but the website 'Tours by Locals' may help. When I used it for Egypt it was only independent guides who did tailor made tours, but now seems to include short tours...or at least a framework for tours. Seems more TripAdvisor- or Viator -ish for my preference, but still lists and reviews private guides.
Hope others here have actual names.

Sorry. I read “guide” as shorthand for “guidebook”. Istanbul is easy to do on your own without a guide.

Hi MS,

While you can visit Istanbul on your own, it is a city that benefits from a local guide.

I can highly recommend Yasemin. I spent the day with her several years ago and she is not only knowledgeable, but a delight to be around. She and I have kept in touch over the years and she has just started her own agency. Here are the details.

We were in Istanbul in 2012 on our own. We used the guidebook for the “usual” sights but hired a guide from SRM Travel for the Alternative Istanbul tour. This tour covered areas that weren’t in the typical guidebook and gave us context for modern Istanbul. It was a day-long tour and well worth it.

I have hired a wonderful tour guide for friends in Istanbul.
His name is Metin
Cell phone number is +90 (533) 322 00 85
Use the app WhatsApp to message him for free.

Metin is funny and his English is excellent!!! I highly recommend him. Metin can also arrange travel and tours in other parts of Turkey for you. He arranged a wonderful tour for me. We were very happy with all arrangements and accommodations.
