Based on a recent thread on the France forum about a bad experience with recovery of toll fees on rental vehicles, I thought I might check how toll fees are recovered for rental vehicles in Turkey as we have a SIXT rental vehicle there in April 2026 and will be travelling on highways subject to toll charges.
In the France post, the OP seemed to be charged an administrative fee by the vehicle rental company to provide contact information of the renter to the toll company for each toll charged; i.e 4 toll charges by the French toll company and 4 corresponding administrative charges by the rental company to provide renter contact info to the French toll company, because the toll company only knows the vehicle owner from the plate number.
In Turkey, the toll system known as HGS is the one most tourists are subject to (...the other system "OGS" works with a toll box that can only be linked to a Turkish bank account). I'm aware that each SIXT rental vehicle in Turkey is equipped with an RFID tag attached to the windshield. Tolls are automatically charged when the vehicle passes through the toll gate. As in the France example, tolls are charged to the vehicle owner. My inquiry to SIXT by email was in regard to how SIXT recovers toll fees from the renter. Here is their response:
First of all, thank you for reaching out to us. All of our vehicles are equipped with HGS (Fast Pass System) tags, allowing automatic barrier access. Drivers are not required to make any manual payments at toll booths. All toll charges are reflected in our system within 10 business days following the end of the rental period and are deducted from the security deposit. An invoice is then prepared and sent to our customer via email.
So it doesn't appear administrative fees are charged by SIXT to provide renter contact info to HGS as toll fees are charged to the vehicle owner (SIXT in this case) and then deducted from the security deposit.
Keep in mind this information is only for SIXT. Other vehicle rental companies may have other protocols. Please check with them.
