No more than any other place. You're more at risk wearing those in the states that you are in probably any European country.

I have a very thin wedding band that I wore when traveling in Europe and left my wedding ring in our safety deposit box. My advice is to not bring anything that’s either sentimental or expensive.

I had to remove my earrings during my trip last month during a TSA check in Europe (they weren’t the cause). I quickly put them in my purse afterwards in the phone pocket, and I lost one of them in the airport. They weren’t expensive or sentimental, but I was still bummed. ; )

The only times my wedding and engagement rings have left my finger was for surgery. And even then it took effort to get them off. I suppose if one or both had particularly large diamonds, I might turn the ring so that the stones were palm side, when I was out on the streets. But I've never found it necessary.

If you never take the rings off, I think you’d be fine. I can’t sleep in any jewelry, so I take mine off at night. I don’t take any jewelry that I would be upset if it were lost or accidentally left behind.

I had a close call with my wedding set several years ago in the US. I was lucky that a housekeeper turned them in and the hotel mailed them to me. I learned my lesson! I bought a "travel ring" that has no sentimental value if I lose it.

If you always wear them on your hands, then I think you don't have to leave them at home

I traveled for years with wearing my engagement and wedding rings. Until one time on the flight home from Europe I used the lavatory. Upon return to my seat I discovered the diamond and the metal it was set in was no longer with the band. Yikes! I immediately started looking around the seat area. Not there. Not in the seat pocket in front of me. Back to the lavatory. It was near the end of the flight. I attempted to check in the refuse slot which was close to overflowing. Seemed an impossible task. The flight attendant was very helpful. Eventually we found it near the seat. I don't recall exactly where. The engagement ring had been my DH mother's so a lot of sentimental value. I would not care to repeat that search.

I now travel with only the wedding band. The engagement ring stays home. Luckily, after 42 years of marriage the engagement ring can still be removed.

Also, I never considered the area on the floor and under the seat of an aircraft to be clean. But let me tell you, at least on this aircraft it was filthy. I've never had it in me to check that area again to make a comparison.

It cost over $300 to have the setting attached to the band.

In my case I believe that my use of a backpack as my "suitcase" is what loosened the setting. All that sliding on and off over the ring must have eventually loosened the setting. I continue to use the backpack which I have always checked, and now a smaller backpack I carry on (vs a hand held item due to personal weight restrictions) and never wear the engagement ring.

Happy travels and I hope this post is helpful.

I also wear two diamond rings at home, one is my engagement ring which I wear on my right hand (didn’t fit with my plain gold wedding ring). The other is a pinky ring with a smaller sized diamond. The only time I did not wear them was when we visited Egypt and Jordan, otherwise they are on my fingers.
But, I don’t take them off to wash my hands, anywhere. At night I put them in a very small jewelry pouch in my purse in case we have to leave quickly. Also where I keep our passports.

Istanbul? I might be more concerned in Barcelona or Paris.

I don’t wear diamonds, but I have a large chunky gold ring of immense intrinsic value that never leaves my hand regardless of where I am. When I had surgery last week and they demanded I remove it, we compromised with taping it to the smaller end of my finger.

Years ago I got a beautiful diamond solitaire ring. I asked my jeweler if he could make a fake copy for travel. He responded, "You wanna get knocked in the head for a cubic zirconia?"

I don't think you have to worry much about any violent crime but you could draw the attention of pickpockets. They might think someone who wears two diamonds might have some goodies or extra cash in their purse or pocket.

It is a personal choice of course. However, travel has plenty of stress, confusion and logistics without worrying about your treasured diamond rings. I never travel with anything I'm not prepared to lose.

I travel with only costume and one gold band. Even in France where I live, if I’m out and about in a tram or metro, no expensive jewelry.

it isn't due to crime, but I wear a band so my diamond ring isn't banged around. I don't have to worry about it.

I never travel with any jewelry that I would be heartbroken to lose. Why risk it? Travel and jet lag cause people to do silly things. Imagine being in a foreign country and your ring falls down the sink? For what? Keep precious things safe at home.
