Can anyone tell me what will be open on May 1st and what to expect as far as protests?
I posed the same question to the RS folks as we're in Rome on our tour on that day. As far as Rome goes this is the response I got from them:
"The Colosseum is open on May 1-no reservations accepted and the Pantheon is closed. With that said, you most likely will see the Pantheon either the night you arrive into Rome on the night walk or on May 2. However the guide needs to work things out, they will. You will see all of the activities but they will just have to see what works best with timing."
Will you be in Istanbul, or the capital Ankara, or a smaller, quieter town? Topkapi Palace, for instance, says that it is open.
May 1st is not a good day to be doing tourist stuff in many parts of Europe.
This could be the day to take a vacation from your vacation.
Chill out and savor the ambience of just being wherever you are.
I will be in Istanbul.
