Kaymakli Underground City

I'm about 5'10". There's no way I can squat-walk or walk bent over through this. Has anyone just tried wearing knee pads and crawling through? Would that be doable?

I'm not sure I want to spend the suitcase room on kneepads though, so what other techniques worked for you?

Thanks!

I'm almost a foot shorter than you and even I had some challenges with the squat walking through some of the tunnels due to the age of my knees. But I would not pack knee pads - it would be a waste of space for just one site. We had some tall folk on our RS tour and they made it through fine. And BTW you aren't crouching down the entire time, just through a handful of passageways. Worst case I'd wear a pair of pants you could scoot on your rear if you needed to. There are a lot of stairs as well which proved more of a challenge for some. Check out YouTube videos that show the more dodgy parts to decide. If you're at all weary of closed in spaces you may want to skip it as it's a one way venture, no turning back once you start. Though I am claustrophobic I went anyway - it was an experience but I probably wouldn't do it again.

I’m 6’2” and managed my way through Kaymakli, though it did call for the duck waddle while crouching here and there.

I am 5’9” no back issues - I would not choose to do this tour again - given my experience. If there are more than a couple tour groups, you can be stuck hunched over for several minutes waiting for a group in front of you to clear which is very uncomfortable. You can visit the first couple rooms before committing to the stooping over part. Once you go past that point, there is no turning back - you must finish. Hope that helps.

I elected to skip this activity. I wanted to give it a go, but changed my mind when I was in the first chamber. I almost had a panic attack. My knees are bad and I had enough trouble going down and then back up the first staircase. My son, also 5'10", went through fine (in his 20's) but said he saw a lot of people struggling. He did say he got stuck in a squat for several minutes while waiting for the group ahead to move out of the way.
