Let's just say it isn't easy to see Jewish Istanbul. We had tried to use the contact information for the Chief Rabbinate that we got on the internet, without success. We were very lucky on a visit to the Jewish Museum last October. The woman in the office gave us a phone number to arrange to visit the Ahrida Synagogue. We had to provide our names and passport details by email, and were advised to arrive at the synagogue (not easy to find, btw) at least 1/2 hour in advance, passports in hand, for security precautions. Several of the synagogues in Istanbul have regular services. We also passed some remnants of Jewish buildings on one of the guided walks in the RS Istanbul guidebook - City Walls & Neighborhoods Walk. The walk does go past the Ahrida Synagogue. We made the mistake of doing the walk backwards, because we started at the Synagogue after our morning visit there. Thus we ended up going uphill instead of downhill.
