Istanbul 21 hour stop over questions

First question- state department website says USA citizens don’t need a visa but then I see other places say you do - is it an evisa?

I’m there from 1600 until the next day at 1100. So not long and mostly at night. I’d like to eat at great places and see asian side too. Sunset on Bosphorus. I’m staying at Turkish airlines hotel. Excited but would love ideas about what to do in that short amount of time. Spice market mosque Turkish baths -wish I was there longer!

Getting to hotel from airport best to take public transportation or private car?

Thanks in advance

Hi rebekah, we were in Istanbul last week. No visa needed for US citizens. This is the official website (https://www.evisa.gov.tr/en/).

We took a sightseeing cruise one afternoon and a dinner cruise with entertainment (belly dancing and a whirling dervish) on the Bosphorus Strait. We also visited the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Spice Market, Grand Bazaar, and Basilica Cistern. Not sure what you’ll be able to do in the short time you have…

With your tight time frame, I would hire private transportation. The new airport is quite a distance from the city center.

Do you know where your hotel is located? Does your flight depart at 1100, or do you need to be back at the airport by 1100?

Turkey required an e-visa for Americans for many years, but they recently stopped requiring it.

Thanks so for your quick replies! Have to be at airport at 1100 flight leaves at 1300. So I imagine I will probably need to leave for airport around 930 or 10am hotel is in old city the grand yavuz

Double check with your airline to see how early it suggests you get to the airport. Mine said 3 hours, or maybe it was 4. The Istanbul airport is very large. Traffic in the city can be nightmarish, so I would definitely not leave my hotel at 10 AM, or even 9:30 AM, for a 1 PM flight.

You are correct, US citizens no longer need a visa. I agree with the recommendation to get private transport from the airport to your hotel. I used Welcome Pickups shuttle and it worked great (I only did pick up but you can save $ booking a return). It is 45-60 minutes from the airport to the city center, traffic is simply a nightmare in Istanbul, no way around it (and it's longer on public transit).

What is your actual flight arrival time? Even if it is on time, the airport is freaking enormous and some flights taxi for at least 20 minutes to the terminal (mine took a little longer). If you're checking luggage that will take some time as well. So if your flight arrives at 4 p.m., taxiing, border control, luggage, and shuttle will get you to your hotel maybe 6 p.m. at the very earliest, probably more like 7.

What day of the week are you arriving? Many Turkish baths are open later hours but you'd want to make a reservation to be sure. With such limited time, I probably wouldn't select that as an option. Both the spice market and Grand Bazaar close at 7 p.m. most days (grand is closed on Sunday). Hagia Sophia has a new process with entry fee and closes at 7:30 p.m. It's about a 15-20 minute walk from your hotel to the Hagia Sophia area. I'm not familiar with the area of your hotel, but you could walk there, look at the outside of things, have dinner, and return to your hotel to get some sleep (you should want to do that.)

Welcome Pickups (and probably others) has a sightseeing tour of sorts which might be an option for you in the morning you return to the airport - they essentially drive you by things but you won't have time to go in. Given your very limited time you might also consider hiring a private guide who can efficiently get you to places you want to see. As acraven suggested make sure you know how much advance check in time you'll need for your onward flight (traffic, security, etc.)

Best of luck!

If your flight gets in at 4:00, you can budget about an hour to get off the plane and out of the airport, and then another hour or so to get into the city. So, I am figuring you would arrive at your hotel around 6:00, which would be cutting things close for an evening Bosphorus cruise or a trip to either the Spice Market or the Grand Bazaar.

There are some great hamams close to your hotel. We had a great experience at Cagloglu Hamam. They are pricey, but they treat you like Ottoman royalty. I just checked that they take their last reservation at 9 pm.

Another option would be have a nice dinner at a rooftop restaurant.

Last time I flew Turkish, they recommended arriving at the airport three hours before the flight. You will need at least an hour to get from the city to the airport. I would schedule transportation for no later than 8:30.

If you are an early riser, you could walk over to the Blue Mosque, which will probably be open. Even if you can't get in, the morning light on the exterior of the mosque is beautiful. (The Hagia Sophia looks better at sunset.) I would probably head to the Blue Mosque (and the Hippodrome) just before sunrise and get back to the hotel in time for a quick breakfast before leaving for the airport.

I have another couple questions - if staying for such short time where would I get money to spend in Istanbul? ATM at airport or in town? Also, does anyone know best kind of taxi or private car to take to hotel from airport since I don’t have time to take public transportation? Thanks again!

Welcome Pickups is a good choice, or you could check to see if your hotel can arrange transportation for you. Transportation arranged by the hotel tends to be on the pricey side, but it's convenient and reliable. I haven't tried Welcome Pickups yet, but I probably will on my next trip.

There are ATM's all over Istanbul, and there should be plenty of them close to your hotel or at the airport. You probably won't need much cash for a quick overnight stay. Most places accept credit cards. Don't take out more than you think you'll need because the lira keeps dropping in value --- there is no point in hanging on to Turkish lira. (It's usually a lot cheaper to use a debit card than a credit card to get cash, but you probably already know that.)

A question for all of you that say “welcome pickups”- my hotel at Taksim square is directly next to the coach stop for the coach from the airport to Taksim Square. Would there be any reason I should not take this route?

There should be nothing wrong at all with doing that. Does the bus go all the way to the airport, or does it take you to a Metro station on the line running out to the airport? I took the latter type of bus from near my hotel in the new city, which was far enough from Taksim that trundling my bag up there didn't really make sense. The bus was absolutely fine, as was the Metro. For the Metro I needed an IstanbulKart (stored-value card). I think it's possible the bus you're planning to take will allow you to pay the fare with a tappable credit card. There are outbound buses from the airport you can pay that way, which may well not accept IstanbulKart payment. Most likely your hotel can provide reliable information on how to pay for the bus, though it may encourage you to book private transportation so it makes a bit of extra money off you.

@acraven. The bus goes all the way from the airport to Taksim Square (line 16). There are ticket booths at the airport for purchasing a ticket and Taksim Square stop is directly in front of my hotel. I figured that even a slightly groggy me could handle that......

There are ATMs in the airport arrivals hall. If you're wanting a bit of cash and some to tip your driver, that's as good a spot as any to get some lira. As previously noted, don't get a ton out for such a short stay. A 200 lira note is the largest that an ATM will dispense and is currently worth about $6 US.

Carol now retired if the bus drops you near your hotel, no reason not to. I stayed in Sultanahmet area and it was going to be quite a walk from the nearest stop to get to my hotel.

It sounds like the Turks appreciate the contribution to their economy made by traveling Americans.
