Hi,
I would like to visit Istanbul, but I can't make up my mind if I should stay 2 days in the old town and 3 days in the new town or visversa? And would 4 days be enough as I may need to cut my holiday short by one day?

Four days is enough. But there's no need to stay in the different hotels old/new town. They're quite close to one another via public transport. My preference would be the old town as this is where most of the tourist sites are.
I stayed in the Old Town both on my own and with Rick Steves' Tours and found it quite convenient. Agreed that there's no need to move during your stay in any single city. Four days (or even just 4 nights and 3 days, if that's the case) will allow you to see a lot of Istanbul.
My husband and I just flew home from Istanbul last week! I loved it so so much! We traveled all over Turkey! I would definately stay in one place and the tram works great or taxis... My preference would be to stay in Sultanhamet (Old City) the whole time unless you are more into night life, shopping, then historic... Again Istanbul is fascinating, magical, the best food, inexpensive, and the people are wonderful!
