In Rick's guidebook on Istanbul he writes that Hagia Sophia is open all day except for during prayer times. However, I find no other information source that says the same. Please advise, as I would definitely make an odd-hour visit rather than brave the crowds of midday.
If Hagia Sophia is open for regular hours, please advise about the best time to avoid crowds.

Thats the newest intel on the opening hours. Also, please note there is restoration occurring so the mosaics might be covered in scaffolding.
Hagia Sophia is open 24/7, but closed 08:30am to 10:00am for cleaning.
Fridays after 12:00 noon to 14:00 although you can go in but cant explore all parts so I suggest not to go between these times
And definetly make sure to visit Hagia Sophia with a tour guide 😉

a2 I was there in August, didn't see any restoration work, but I guess that might of changed.
a3 Also know during prayer hours that all signs of Christianity are covered with canvas.
