I know that Turkey has been fighting with the Kurds since Syria’s regime fell. Has that impacted Göbekli Tepe?if not, can anyone recommend an English speaking guide to the ruins?
We toured Gobekli Tepe on our own in May 2024 but we used Gobekli Tours to visit Harran, Karantepe and some other ruins in the area. They did a great job for the three of us and I would recommend them for a tour of Gebekli Tepe. I would assume they can shed light on any changes to visiting since May 2024. Gobekli Tepi is at the top of my travel wishlist, and I regret that my plans to go last fall fell through. Right now, though, I am not sure I would do it. It's about 25(?) miles from the Syrian border, and deep in Kurdish territory. There are just too many unknowns with recent events in Syria, and I would wait for things to settle down a bit. It's probably okay, but it's beyond my comfort level today. In a few months, I might reconsider.
Turkey has been fighting with the Kurds since forever.
I have no idea how much the recent events in Syria would impact safety of casual travel to Göbekli Tepe. I considered going there a few years ago, but decided to steer clear of anything near that corner of the country, as tempting as it was and still is. I would still give it a pass at least for the time being. There's a lot of dust still to settle and I think it's difficult for most of us to get a clear view of the current state of things, never mind how things will look 6- to 12 months ahead. Me, I'll be waiting a while before contemplating any visits to the region. YMMV.
