Getting from Izmir to Athens

We’re doing Greece right after Turkey Spring 2024. We need to get from Izmir to Athens and I’m trying to decide which mode of transportation to take. I like the idea of a quick flight and settling in our hotel but a ferry through the Greek islands would be beautiful. Has anyone done either of these? Can we decide at the last minute? I would do the ferry but I’ve read a lot of horror stories of extremely rough seas. Any input would be appreciated! TIA.

You would have to take a bus from Izmir to the Çeşme Bus Station in Turkey (1h). The ferry departs Çeşme arriving in Chios (Greek Island) 45m later. From Chios you can take a direct ferry to Piraeus, Athens port that will take 13h 45m. You can also take an overnight ferry and rent a sleeper room. The overnight ferry takes 9h 45m.

There were direct flights from Izmir to Athens operated by Pegasus Airlines. I don't know the current flights, but it's better to fly than a connection ferry.
