What would you do with a free day in Antalya? We will be on the RS Best of Turkey Tour in November and have a day on our own. Suggestions from the tour info include a day sailing, visiting nearby towns with ancient ruins, the Antalya Archaeological Museum, a Turkish bath, the beach or exploring the town of Antalya.
We have been on several sailing vacations so this seems like a been there done that and so far we are not sold on the bath experience. We are not fans of massages and having reluctantly taken 2 hot stone baths in Bhutan, it was certainly an experience but I did not like it much. Maybe you can convince me?
Will we see enough archaeological museums and ancient ruins elsewhere that these would be redundant? I do love ruins.
Please share your experiences and recommendations. Thanks!
By that time of year most daily tour boats will have stopped working and be laid up for winter and for any that are still working you could face a chilly day out on the water plus the chance of rain.
With only 1 day there I'd stay in Antalya itself. The museum is superb;well stocked and well displayed, one of Turkey's best. But at the other end of the seafront near the old harbour is Antalya's jewel;the old Ottoman quarter of Kaleiçi(prn.kalay-ichi) and you can easily spend most of the day there wandering around it's tiny, quaint winding lanes and beautifully restored old wooden buildings.Don't miss the unusual fluted minaret of Yıvılı Camii(mosque) either.
Will this be towards the end of your tour?If so you could be starting to get a bit....'ruined out' by then so this could be a nice change for you.
If you still haven't had your ruins quotia at that stage :) then you could take a bus to nearby Side(prn.si-day)an hour away. This small town is built around some very impressive Roman remains right on the seafront and has one very long sand beach to stroll along.Side also has a small but decent museum too.
