I want to travel from Athens to Izmir. Apparently there are no direct flights. Anyone have experience with the ferry.

Pegasus Airlines has a direct flight. There are no direct ferries; you can take ferry connections Athens-Samos-Kusadasi.

There is not a direct ferry from Athens to Izmir but can make your way from Athens to Cesme via Chios.
Have a look at Athens (Piraeus) - Chios and then Chios - Cesme ferries.
