BBC and Swedish Reporters Covering Protests Arrested by Turkish Police

A Swedish newspaper reporter who was going to be covering the street protests in Turkey was arrested Thursday upon his arrival at IST airport in Turkey and charged with “insulting the President” and “ membership in a terrorist organization.”
Kaj Joakim Medin works for the Swedish newspaper “Dagens ETC.”. The publication said it would be working for Medin’s release.
The day before Medin’s arrest, BBC television correspondent Mark Lowen was taken from his hotel room by police in Istanbul and detained for seventeen hours before being expelled from the country. Mr. Lowen, who had been living in Turkey for more than five years, had been covering the street protests in Istanbul for the BBC. He was labeled “ a threat to public order” before being expelled from Turkey.
Reporters Without Borders, an advocacy group for journalists said that Kaj Joakim Medin’s arrest signaled “the first time that clearly identified journalists who were in the middle of working have been sent to prison. It is indefensible to target those who are trying to tell what is happening.”

“ a threat to public order”

Anyone, especially a foreigner, with a device capable of recording images could probably fit that definition

I wonder if RS Inc is pondering what to do about their upcoming tours to Turkey.

I am not going to profess an opinion on a situation that is most likely 10 thousand times more complex than what a 3 minute video or 6 paragraph news story could begin to relate.

The only thing useful to the tourism intent of the forum is that the protests are very large and have been going on for 9 days and it is very likely that they will upset tourism plans in Istanbul. So, unless some reliable first hand tourism information becomes available to the contrary, probably not a great time to visit Istanbul.
