Alcohol in Turkey Outside Istanbul

Drinking alcohol is considered haram, or forbidden, in Islam, yet I know wine and beer is plentiful and reasonably priced in cosmopolitan Istanbul, available in most restaurants and shops.

Outside of Istanbul, however, I wonder if it is acceptable to order alcohol in Ankara, Cappadocia and the Mediterranean and Aagean coasts. Do you know if it is acceptable to order alcohol in these regions of Turkey?

Yes, of course if they are business selling it. Just like here in America there are dry towns where selling alcohol is banned (e.g. South Holland, Illinois) and liquor stores in Chicago owned by Muslims who don't drink alcohol but are making a living selling alcohol.

Anywhere tourists go in Turkey— there are restaurants serving beer and wine. There also are package liquor stores.

Ha! I once saw a place selling jello shots in Antalya. Cappadocia is more conservative, but wine and beer are still available. Even in Aglasun/Sagalassos, which is pretty remote, I was able to order wine with dinner.

As Kenko said, if there are tourists there will be alcohol.

Turkey is quite proud of some of its regional wines. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that most of Turkey practices strict adherence to Islam. It just isn’t the case.

Alcohol was available every night at dinner. What i missed was the absence of pork, especially bacon. Breakfast buffet included was looked liked Sliced hot dogs (chicken? Beef?) Floating in some sort of sauce. Twice dinner included some sliced turkey breast that had some sort of rub and then grilled, excellent. Buffet dinner at the hotel was included every night in our package tour, some places labeled dishes, at other places it was a mystery
