My son who is in his 20’s will be doing a solo travel in the spring. Of course I’m a mom and worry! He’s thinking of a hostel because of affordability. He’s just starting his search but any thoughts about any of these accommodations? Safer areas to stay than others? Thanks!
Dear Mom, I get it. He will be fine in either. I like Airbnb's as I feel like I'm getting a home rather than a "bedroom". However, a young man in his 20s will mostly likely not be spending any time having coffee in the kitchen in the morning or on a patio in the afternoon. So... whatever is cheapest will be the best option for him. J
(ps I took all 3 to Italy for their 21st birthday and the grandson to France when he was 15, think about going with as they will always remember it). J
When my son travels alone he rents a room in a home through Air B&B. It has worked out really well for him.
Since you posted in the Turkey forum, are you asking about Turkey or Istanbul specifically? I stayed at Agora Guesthouse in Istanbul which is part hostel, part hotel. The hotel part was affordable to me but I don't know what your son's budget might be. If he's planning to do the hostel thing, make sure he researches safety tips generally (how to store bags safely, etc.). Every type of accommodation and city comes with its own set of risks, but research, awareness, and street smarts will get him far.
And FWIW I am three decades older than your kid and my mom still frets about all my travels. After 20 years of following my solo trips I really appreciate that she simply says "have a good time and stay safe" and leaves it at that :)
