11 day trip in Turkey

Hi,
I'm planning a trip to Turkey with my parents, sis and 2 young kids at the end of May 2014. We have booked an apartment at the Cihangir area for 10 nights.
We won't be renting a car and just plan to walk and take public transport/ferry to tour the major tourist attractions. What would be the best option for us to go around Istanbul? Is there a family pass for public transport?
We also would like to take day trips out of Istanbul. Where would be the nice places to visit and the best mode of transport?

Thanks so much for your help!

Warmest Regards.
Elaine

Hello,

I'm planning a trip to Turkey myself, and while I can't answer any of your questions, I wanted to make sure you are aware of the new Turkish visa requirement. As I understand it, tourists from the USA and amy other countries could get a visa upon arrival. That has changed, or at least it will change by the time of your trip. You need to apply online. I just did this the other day - it was very quick, and cost US$20.

Make sure you apply through the official Turkish government site.

My trip is planned for late April. I'll try and offer some helpful hints when I get back.

As I recall, public transport in Istanbul was ridiculously cheap. One lira (?) for a tram ride. No need for any kind of money-saving pass.

Rosalyn is correct - the public transportation is very cheap. You can try using Google and search - there may be a family pass that would then also let you into some of the attractions, but I'm not aware of anything. The Princes Islands are a popular place for a day trip, there are ferries that run there.

We too are planning a trip to Turkey and was curious about Chuck who must have obtained his visa for Turkey online? How did he do that. Look forward to your comments and tips when you get back.
