My family of 5 adults recently rented a house in Fowey, spending a week enjoying the sights using local buses and walking. We are fans of slow travel, and like spending more time in a limited area. Fowey is a lovely town for a base, having a Spar market, a greengrocer, a bakery, multiple pubs and restaurants, and several tourist oriented shops. Three of us arrived by direct train from London; the other two took the commuter train from Newquay airport. We had booked taxis ahead for the 15 minute trip to Fowey. We travel with carry on luggage and are all good walkers. We did not miss having a car, and our potential drivers could enjoy all the scenery and perhaps an ale for lunch. We downloaded the OS Maps app for walking and the Traveline southwest app for bus timetables and stops. Bus fares were paid by tapping a credit card or phone. We did not miss having a car at all.
Days were spent as follows;
Sunday- Passenger ferry across the estuary for The Hall Walk with a Sunday roast in Polruan, water taxi back to Fowey.
Monday- Walked the Saints Way to Polkerris for a pub lunch, returned to Fowey on the SWCP by the Gribbin Head Day Mark.
Tuesday- Local bus to Charlestown (25 minutes) to explore the historic 18th c. harbor, part of the Luxulyan Valley Unesco Heritage site. After lunch there we walked on the SWCP to Par where we caught the bus back to Fowey.
Wednesday- Ferry (40 min.) across the St. Austell Bay to Mevagissey, a picturesque fishing village. After a seafood lunch we did a circular walk on the hills around town returning on the SWCP. After a delicious cream tea we boarded the last ferry back to Fowey.
Thursday- Local bus to Tywardreath for a pub lunch followed by an ambitious walk up the Luxulyan Valley to the Treffry Viaduct and other 18th c. industrial ruins from China clay mines. We caught the bus from Luxulyan back to St. Blazey and on to Fowey at the end of the day (about 50 minutes with a bus change).
Friday- Kayak hire for 1/2 day in the Fowey Estuary up the river to a pub lunch in Golant. We also took the short walk to St. Catherine's Castle in Fowey.
All our evening meals were eaten in Fowey, booked ahead. It was a fabulous week and we were sorry to leave- just gettng familiar with the shops and side alleys of Fowey. Cheers to Slow Travel!
Sounds like a great week in Fowey! The Fowey/Polruan area is very pleasant and one of my favorite places.
We spent a week and a half just a few miles north of you in Wadebridge in June without a car and got around pretty well by bus and occasionally train. Our longest day was a bus trip that took over an hour to go 16 miles but we spent the day exploring around Tintagel and it was worth it. We visited Fowey too. It was charming.
