Wachau Waldviertel

We really enjoyed our five-night stay in Dürnstein, Austria. Thanks to Emily for recommending Winzerhof Stöger to stay. We drove and brought our own E-bikes (home in Oberpfalz, DE). This is a place for low and slow older riding. Marillen and other fruit trees in bloom. I think I saw 6 river Danube cruise ships in one morning from here. So many Winzer. We visited Melk too, taking the bus on a rainy Tuesday. Loved the 1 May Maybaum standing in Dürnstein. Maybe better to go in June, with the grill evenings and Heuriger. A really great trip I can recommend.

Thanks for your report. We will take a day trip or maybe overnight trip from Vienna this summer and we’ve been hoping we might make it to Dürnstein. We visited Krems and Melk Abbey on a previous trip, no car but a train boat trip.

We bought wine from Weingut Pomaßl, I thought it was a unique corner area with the Danube flowing northwards. We had dinner at Altes Presshaus, Alter Klosterkeller, Restaurant Lebstoeck'l and Weingut Mang (Weißenkirchen). All were good. A nice bike ride was from Dürnstein to the bridge over the Danube at Mautern, then west to the motorless ferry by Weißenkirchen and back to Dürnstein. Café/Konditorei Elisabeth in Weißenkirchen is a nice stop too. Mohnzelten were good! Like other tourist villages, Dürnstein can be packed during the afternoon, but empty at night and in the mornings.

Sounds great. We will be staying at Haus Lindernhofer in Emmersdorf. We hope to wine taste one day and bike ride the other. Any suggestions for a couple of wineries and anybody know of a bike shop in the above town?: I know I can goggle but a recommendation is always preferred :) We are coming from Prague too Miribor so will have a car. We will have two nights. Thanks all.

Emmersdorf is nowhere near the Wachau, nicolatwig.

Edit - I see that you mean Emmersdorf an der Donau, not Emmersdorf. Emmersdorf an der Donau is in the Wachau, but not where I would stay.

We considered buying wine from Bioweingut Schmidl in Dürnstein, because we liked it, but never visited there. We liked the wine at Weingut Mang in Weißenkirchen too (had some Saumaise). We also stopped by Weingut Emmerich Knoll between Dürnstein and Krems 1 May. No chance for a table, but we did have some wine. Really nice wine garden outside there (a little exclusive). We also enjoyed the wine a Winzerhof Stöger where we stayed. Not a Winzer, but Pulker`s Heuriger in Rührsdorf looked interesting, unfortunately we were there too early in the day, and they were closed (opened at 14:00). We did have a small tasting at Weingut Pomaßl between Dürnstein and Weißenkirchen, and brought home some Grüner Veltliner and Riesling that we could fit into the car. They are a little hidden up the hill. Really so many Wintzer in the area.
