Visiting Hadrian's Wall - Go to Vinolanda. Get A Tour Guide

A group of eight 60 Plus seniors decided to walk a portion of Hadrian's Wall. Well worth the time and effort , but it is a walk in teh countryside complete with farmlands, some steep hillsides and stairs. If you only have a day or two I would recommend focusing ont eh sycamore gap area and visit Vindolanda Fort. We employed the services of Peter Carney who gives an amazing tour of the history of the area. Whether you do not know much about Emperor Hadrian or are a student of the Roman Empire, Peter will both inform and entertain! Peter took us out to the sycamore gap area and walked us through a few museums. We all agreed it was the highlight of the entire walk. His business email is hadrianswall-walk.com. Check it out and have fun!

Thank you for this information. Did you go to Housesteads Fort? If so, what are your comments about it?

Hi. Yes we did. Peter too us through it which really help explain the history. We signed up for a 5 day walk along the center portion of the wall withMac Adventures - also recommended - and took a rest day at Once brewed area. Peter took us to the Fort and also a Roman Calvary museum. The museums help fill in the story of the wall. It was a great time. You just need to make sure you scope out the transportation aspect first. The buses have designte pick up on a two hour schedule and limited taxi service. No uber. We took buses but Peter has a car to take you around if you have a small group or he can rent a van if you have a large one. Museum and going to sycamore gap are must sees even though the tree at sycamore gap was chopped down by vandals. I hope to get back that way. Beatifuk land and great people. And not crowded.

I should correct myself. We only briefly visited the actual fort ruins. We spent most of our time walking around the area and at the museums. Peter also took us out to Cawfields to see a gate and wall structure.

Every time someone comes on to ask about Hadrian’s Wall, I always recommend Peter Carney. He adds tremendous value to the experience!
