Just spent time in Scotland, the Orkney Islands, York and London. Highlights for us on the trip were the Orkney Islands, the Britannia in Edinburgh, the York Minster, Thirsk (for James Herriot fans), the lovely countryside of Scotland and Wimbledon tennis. (We had no tickets but queued for grounds passes at 3 PM and that worked reasonably well.) As with any trip there were learning experiences. We have taken RS tours in the past and traveled on our own using his guide books to choose hotels and were always satisfied. However in London we did not have a good experience at the Jubilee Hotel - near Victoria Station. Our rooms (ours and that of my sister who was traveling with us) were extremely small, were not clean, and the staff was not very welcoming at all. Compared with the hospitality at the Kenvie Guest House in Edinburgh and the Queen Anne Guest House in York the difference was startling. Of course if we had double checked the RS recommendations with comments on Trip Advisor beforehand we would have discovered that many other people had exactly the same experience and would have saved ourselves a lot of grief. From now on we will use RS recommendations as a starting place and check other sites before making a reservation.
