Tube Strike Survivor

Have nothing but good news about "surviving" the Tube strike in London last week--it forced me to get to know the bus system better, and I rode in a black cab for the first time. I also walked from Lancaster Gate to the river and back...lost track of how many miles that was, but I landed in some streets I'd never seen! Anyway, good report on a London stopover at No. 63 on Bayswater Road and the Byron Hotel en route to a bike& barge trip with Yub!ke aboard the Gandalf out of Amsterdam. Good, sunny cycling around Haarlem, Leiden and Lisse with well-informed guides. Spent one night in Delft at the Emauspoort (loved both Delft and the hotel). Also spent some time in York post-bike trip. Thumbs up for the Mont Clare Guesthouse, the Minster (one of the most impressive churches I've seen in Europe), and a lovely afternoon tea at Betty's. The Railway Museum is impressive but not as hot to trot as I thought it would be. To be honest, kinda wished I'd spent that hour doing something else. Rick's self-guided tours of the Minster and the town are both worthwhile. Did the Terror Trail ghost walk. Our guide was a fun presenter and for five pounds it's another way to see some of the buildings and monuments in the town. Plenty of shopping in York as well. And yes, as RS mentions, I stopped in the St. Crux parish hall for a cup of coffee. Great for a break and people watching.

Heathrow note: Flying out of the UK, they are very thorough about carry-ons, small liquids in baggies, etc. I had some small hotel size liquids in a cosmetic bag (but not in a ziploc) TSA hasn't batted an eye at in years. At Heathrow they were inspecting a lot of bags last week and I had to sort and consolidate. Be prepared.

All in all, a very enjoyable trip! :)

Rachel,
I don't know if you want to post that Heathrow tip as a new thread, but it is worth noting. Like you, TSA has let me take through more than 1 quart size Baggie without saying anything, but LHR says "1 bag" and they mean only 1. Out went some hair products. Also, they stopped my husband for not taking out his I-pad, but my I-pad mini went through O.K. It's just that when stuff gets flagged for checking, they are very thorough and that can take a loooong time!

Congrats on surviving!

I concur, they are very thorough at Heathrow.. I got pulled to the side last week as my things went through their xray, for extra check of my toiletries.

Yesterday I went through Heathrow security and it was very fast, didn't even have to take off shoes.
I think how much time it will take is unpredictable.

The Tube is great: for reading on the Tube, suggest "The Little Book of the London Underground."

Good for you for figuring out the bus system! I was in London about 2 years ago and had to find my way from Bayswater to the Tower of London on the Tube, which would have been fine if I had paid attention to "planned engineering." The station at the Tower was closed and I spent 50 minutes on the Tube (had no idea of the most efficient way to get there, obviously!) and arrived at the station but couldn't get out! Luckily I was meeting a friend at the Tower whom I called, and she met me at the nearest station with a working exit.

Heathrow seems to be thorough about everything, and has been for years. I flew through there a few years ago and was flagged at security because I had nail scissors. They had to check whether the scissors were allowed in carry-on bags, and told me the rules changed pretty often. And yes, once they flag you for a security check, they're very thorough in that regard too!
