I am planning a trip to Ireland March 21-29, solo. I am exploring my Irish heritage. Will arrive in Dubin; spend 1-2 nights in Dublin; then travel to Newgrange; stay 1-2 nights in the region; tour Hill of Tara; and then drive to Dowra. Will spend a few nights in Dowra region. What are must do sites after leaving Dowra? My thoughts are to drive around the border of the Republic of Ireland back up to Dublin. Will depart Dublin for England on March 29. Thanks.
If I read your timeframes correctly, you'll only have about 3 days after your time in the Dowra region. That isn't enough time to drive the border of the Republic (unless you drive without stopping.) Your must-do sites are going to be really subjective, so I'm not sure the forum can help you without more information. Consider reviewing the 14 day Ireland tour stops and see what excites you, and then plan to drive directly there (castles? the Wild Irish Way? the Aran Islands?) Also consider flying into Dublin and out of Shannon to maximize your time at the places you really want to see, without backtracking. Whatever you end up doing, this sounds like a wonderful adventure. Have a lovely time!
Thank you for these suggestions, especially about flying out of Shannon to maximize my time. I will consider adding a few extra days to my itinerary.
I'd go the other way: Sligo and Donegal. Check the one-way fee for the rental car and consider dropping it off in Donegal, Derry, Knock... There are lots of airports in Ireland. Check to see which ones have flights to whatever city in England you're planning to visit. The flights are likely to be quite inexpensive.
